rear diff

I'm trying to find out if all 3rd gen 4runners used the same size diff. From what I understand the tacoma used an 8.4 standard and an 8.0 electric for the rear, thus you cannot modify the 8.4 housing to accept the 8.0 electric, but you can on the earlier hi-lux (95-older) as they use an 8.0. I've heard rumors that all the 4runners were 8.0, but I want to know for sure,as it will effect what I buy, if its 8.0 I'm not worried I can modify the housing,I'v done it before, but if its 8.4 I would have to get a new housing,so I would rather just find one with an electric locker. please reply, thank you.

Only TRD taco's have 8" I believe.

When buing if the drain plug is on the left side of the housing its an 8" but if its on the right its a 8.4"

this is true, all 4runners since day 1 ('84) have had the 8"

the 4th gens use the 8.4 housing with 8" innards, go figure...
