Rear axle leak

my rear axle is leaking right under the pumpkin.

1). is this the main seal?
2). how you fix it?
3). is this covered under 60k powertrain warranty?
4). why is it leaking?

(btw, i have extendeded the breather).

I cant tell you the exact name in the FSM, but I can tell you its under powertrain warranty. Take the diff breather off before you go in. No need to give them any ammo against you.

Rear main seal

There is likely a problem with the seal in the pumpkin. It's not a terribly hard fix, but not that easy either.

I have an 87 runner and had the same problem. Had to take off both wheels & brake assmeblies and pull the axles out. Then you just take the differential housing apart and put the new seal in. I actually ripped 2 or 3 trying to get it back together cause I didn't have anyone helping me and kept ripping the crap out of it when trying to line the housing cover back up (while laying on my back).

However, no problem with leake since.

My opinion is that it should be covered under the 60k pt waranty since it is part of the powertrain. when my axle seal went out before 60k they covered that under the powertrain waranty. and I agree with 96 runner, take the breather ext. off.

EDIT:

from the pic it looks like your bottom nut is loose. just a thought.
