Re-taping stripped threads

The threads that hold my skid plate are stripped. The bolts are 14mm I think.

Do I have to drill out the stripped threads before re-taping? Also, how do I determine what size to get? How hard is it to do?

We just had a dicussion about the screws stripping out in the skid plate. The original bolts are self tapping and screw up the threads bad. I replaced mine with new ones. See https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...73#post131473. I think the size was M8x1.25. If they are stripped bad get the M8x1.25 tap from a hardware store or automotive store. Just run the tap into the holes until it binds then back off, then run it in farther etc. Use kerosene as a lube on the tap. It is not hard at all. Don't put the original bolts back in at all, use the ones listed in that discussion. If the holes are only slighty stripped, the new bolts may be all thats needed to fix the threads.

I would just run the tap. Usually drilling isn't required unless a bolt head gets stripped off and the rest of the bolt is in the hole or the threads are so shot that you need to drill them out and tap for a bigger hole. Also, when I am unsure what size tap I need I usually take the bolt to a hardware store, find what nut fits, and then use that size of tap. Finally, If you get a tap, make sure to get a T-handle for holding the tap. Makes the job much easier.

Guys,

Thanks for the replies this was exactly what I needed. I even know why they are stripped now.
