digging it out could allow for flooding though, if you're below grade

don't forget about the existing interior of the garage that would also need to be dug out and have a new concrete slab poured.

Sounds like a reason to get a winch! He could be the only guy in the Americas that has to winch his vehicle out of the garage.

Why do they need a flatbed?

normally you dont need a flatbed, if a regular tow rig isnt available then you get a fb. rear drive vehicles can be towed as yours was, the tcase allows the front wheels to be 'disconnected' manually. sometimes the tow companies will use a dolly for the front wheels as a precaution against damaging the drive line components, protects them from paying for damages the could occur during the tow.

Yeah it's only bad if you tow it from the front with the rear wheels on the ground without disconnecting the driveshaft. This is because there is no fluid running through the auto - 5speed doesn't matter. It will burn stuff up even in neutral. The front wheels won't matter because the front diff is disconnected with regular ADD and if he has manual hubs, the CVs won't turn at all.

I've got a friend that owns a tow company. He's making a lot more money than I will be when I graduate and he didn't have to pay $50K for a degree. There's something wrong with this picture.
