I did it(3.4) but I had to use a 1" plug vs. 1.5" because the hole where the silencer goes was 1". That put my hose barbs rather close together(within 1/2". Does it matter? I still mounted them up and down.

It runs fine and you can really hear the motor when you step on it

 

You should be fine, but I would update the primary silencer with a cap like this:
