question about motor options

So Ill be looking to get a newer Toyota pickup next summer and I was wondering what motor to look for. Ive seen alot of people bash the 3.0, why is that? Should I just stick with the 22R/22RE?

the 22R/22RE wont have a prob in an extended cab with bigger tires and a lift will it?

What year are you looking for? The 3.0 is a great engine,it is just weak. The only thing to watch out for with the 3,0 is the headgasket problem. Make sure it has been done. The 22R/RE is even weaker but bombproof. If you want more power then I would get a 96 or newer with the 3.4. Hope this helps.

i wouldn't call a 22R a weak motor. it's pretty powerful for a small 4 cylinder, especially in its heyday. of course it's not going to be the quickest in a 4runner, let alone a heavy beast of a 2nd gen

Im not looking for speed or fast acceleration. Im looking for a motor that will take abuse every day and wont sweat it, and will be able to get me out of the mud if I get stuck and gets good gas milage.

There's nothing wrong w/the 3.0, I personally think it's a fabulous motor! It does lack power, but on the other hand the low end torque is pretty incredible! I have 304,000 miles on mine and get 21+ mpg! If your going to get a 3.0 make sure it's a manual tranny, the auto's are more of a dog!
Good Luck!
