Q re Yakima "Load Warrior" baskets

Q re Yakima "Load Warrior" baskets
I keep thinking about getting one of these things, but am wondering about their sturdiness and utility and unforseen problems relating to them. To those of you who have/ have had them, what has your experience been?
I like the idea of having a platform for roof storage for stuff without having to worry about scratching the paint or dinging the sheetmetal on the roof, but wonder whether there are problems w/ these things that I can't foresee. Bad effect on gas mileage? Buffeting due to wind resistance? Noise? Are they strong enough to handle a strapped down canoe? If I get one, is it better to get a regular Load Warrior or the larger "Mega Warrior"?
Thanks for any feedback.

Twice-Bought 96....
I purchased my load warrior shortly after Corey got his.
I installed it on my '97 4runner.
Last year i was building a large fence around my yard. I had over stocked on lumber. So i went to take the left over lumber back and decided to just put it up on top.
I had 10 4x4's, 20 2x4's and about 50 1x6 ceder planks.
There was alot of weight up there. This was on my stock cross bars also.
Several weeks after that we went camping and i had a ton of junk up there. Kinda looked like Clark Griswald
I had 3 tents, a cooler, stove, baby playpen, picnic table, lawn chairs, water jug and i think a neighbor kid:eek:
There was alot of stuff up there. And i only have the regular load warrior.
I cant imagine how much stuff you can put up there with the extention like the one Corey has.
Here is a picture when i had it on my '97.

Like Todd said, they are built great.
I did get some wind noise at first after removing the shield up front, but I put on a Yakima Wind Jammer, and that heled to disipate the wind flow over the rack and stop the "whooshing" sound.
Now that I have added many other items hanging off of the rack, I get about zero wind noise from it.
Yakima is coming out with new acc. for it all the time too.
They now have an axe/shovel mount out, and you can find it by searching for some of my old posts here with those key words and my name.
But in the meantime, you can see here some of the ideas I came up with for adding stuff to the rack.

Hey Twice-Bought 96,
If your a local I have mine for sale. I also have the extension for it as well.
Here it is without the extension and mounted directly to the factory rack.
Disadvantage to mounting on the factory rack is that you will hear alot of sqeeking when it is loaded with cargo. And Your limited to accessories .
Loadwarrior on Factory Rack
With extension and mounted on the Yakima rack.
With the Yakima rack you'll be able to take advantage of the accessories such as the High Lift Jack mounts.

Thanks for the feed back. I'm in Atlanta, if anyone has one for sale here.
Sounds like it's best to get the Yak cross bars/towers rather than mount directly to the OEM cross bars. If you go that route do you have to remove youe OEM cross bars or just leave 'em down there under the raised basket?
Thanks again,
Carl

Hey Corey...
What width cross bars are on your truck? The setup I am looking at here has 48" bars, I believe. That sure sounds narrow to me. On my FJ60 I had 58" bars and they didn't stick out all that much ( not even as far outboard as the nerf bars). From your pics it looks like you have the 58"s.
Ever gotten that high-lift hung up on a branch on a skinny trail?

Hi Carl.
I beleive mine are the 58" or 60" ones.
They are old, as I bought them back in '88.
They have been on 3 Toyotas now.
I have heard branches scraping on top of the basket and stuff up there, but for the better, I think it helps you plow through the trail better
I like the extra width too as you can see I have the Hi-Lift mounts off on the extra part there, and I have a Yakima Lockjaw bike rack on the other overhanging part.
Currently I don't have anything attached to the LW's built in bars on top.
I have in the past though, as that is where I had the Yakima Button Down 4 ski racks attached too.
