power steering help

I drive a 92 pickup with v6. In the past say 2 years I have replaced the power steering pump 3 times. Part of that time I drove without the pump on. Well the pump went out again. My question is, did driving without the pump mess up the gear box which is causing the pumps to fail? Also, I have found a used gear from an 88 pickup. Are all of the ifs style boxes the same or would I have to make the older one work on my truck? thanks

I don't have an answer to any of your questions but recently I lost a bearing on the belt idler pulley on one of my trucks and was forced to remove the power steering belt. I drove it that way for about a week and it didn't seem to have any negative affect on the ps system when I got it back together. Somebody around here ought to know this one. Good luck!

yeah I was going to replace the gear box last time but when I put the new "junkyard" pump on it worked great. This pump lasted much longer than two pumps from the "zone". I am planning on putting a front locker in and am wondering how the it will last if I just do the pump again and not the gear.
