Power Steering Fluid Steepage

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if you guys could give me some insight into this problem.

The fluid level is good but I always get some residue on the pump and on the hood. I've heard others having the same problem. Is there anything I should do? Maybe replace with a new cap that may provide a better seal?

My truck is a 2003 4x4 V6 5spd TRD tacoma.

Thanks

Take it in and have it replaced under warranty. My buddy has the exact same truck as you down to the year and options and his power steering pump went recently. Replaced under warranty.

I'd run with Coed's suggestion of the warrantee work..., you can't beat the freebies..., but it's either the pulley's bering seal or the little "O" ring on the bottom of the resevoir..., for potential future reference.

My buddies pump went about 4/5's of the way through the warranty. When it originally had a problem they tried just fixing something minor thinking that would work. The next time it was back in for servicing the power steering fluid was everywhere. They then replaced it. I know it's expensive to fix, however it seems to me to be a common problem with the 01-04 tacoma's. The other thing that I am curious about, is there was that ball joint recall on your truck. I wonder if there is some way that the ball joint recall and potential issues could affect the power steering pump? I know it sounds unlikely - but is there any way it could be linked?

It would be more likely that the PS leak is what prompted the balljoint recall due to damage from leakage. Actually, the PS rebuild kit is pretty inexpensive and not at all that hard to do. There is a great how-to link or two here that details all you'll need to know.
