popping sometimes when started!!! Any ideas, thanks..

Sometimes when I start my 02 Runner, I get kind of a popping noise from either the intake or the exhaust....I think, I can't really tell. Almost like a back fire....

Anyway, I have done most of the air mods, but this popping occurred before I did anything to my truck. Does any of you have or have had this experience? Also any ideas on cures or where to look for the problem?

Thanks again.

Doug

If you think its a back fire, start it up and let it idle while holding a dollar bill firmly in front of the exhaust pipe. If there is any kind of miss, it will pop the dollar bill.

As for the intake, I have heard what you are describing on my 98 Tacoma. But, never on my 96 Runner. I had all air mods on the Taco, and the same on my 96. I believe it has to do with the butterfly in the TB and its position. But that's just speculation.

I would like to know too!

Popping noise

I asked some of the techs here and it isn't anything we have heard of here. I would suggest getting it to your local dealership for service ASAP.

Thanks for the insight.

I will try to get something to record it when it happens again, but you know how that works. You start and then................"Damn it happened again" "Wheres my recorder".

Just a quick update, I have yet to record the damn noise when starting, but I diud notice that my butterfly was not completely closing. I found this out when I took it apart to clean it. I initially pushed on it and it snapped shut. Almost a 1/4 of an inch, thats all. Maybe this is causing some type of backdraft or vacuum of air thats popping??? I'll kepp checking and post when/if I can record it.

Thanks again
