From personal experience, shimming the accumulators alone does almost nothing for shift time. In my case they installed super stiff double springs and it still had hardly any noticeable effect.

They also had to turn the line pressure all the way up to get any real noticeable difference in shift time. Still not as good as a proper IPT VB job though.

I am guessing there are some places that need to be drilled out as the limiting factor for shift time, where and how I have no idea.

I can say from listening to your trans shift under WOT, it is not going to live long without a valve body mod of some kind. I got about 10k miles out of mine.
Pretty strange you had no noticeable effect. I just added 1/2" shims to the first two accumulators on mine a few weeks back. Shifts are much quicker a tighter. My trans had no adjustment (that I could see) for the fluid pressure.

Then again, the valve body on your trans is different that the older style that I have, so who knows.

--Side note, watching your meth injection videos on youtube now.

Yeah, not real sure what to make of it. The shifts did feel like they "started" harder but then peattered out to the same old shift 1/3 to 1/2 way through the shift which would not help longevity much.

After upping the line pressure to the max it then felt noticeably firmer and had the desired effect. Now it feels like a stock auto transmission from most other vehicles I have driven.

Hope you enjoy the videos!

If your really going to race your truck offroad you need a different trans, either a manual or a tougher auto

Actually the a340 can be made VERY strong.

How much power you making? IPT can build it for whatever you want.

If stock or supercharged a valve body will take care of you. If making more power then that then you will need to start looking at building the transmission if you want it to truly last.

I beg to differ. Looking at the size of the clutches alone in a A340 proves that it could not handle that kind of abuse. They can be built surprisingly tough, just look at some of the supras out there. However I strongly feel that if your racing CORR KOH BAJA or any other brutal offroad race, the a340 simply would not hold up. Those races put a LOT of strain on a drivetrain.

ok well first off my 4Runner will be completely stock in terms of forced induction. Second the A340E is actually a pretty strong tranny and my transmission has 220xxx miles on it and it still runs perfectly fine, neither the engine or tranny have given me probs or had any major repairs. The engine is going to be ported and polished and the valves are going to get enlarged and the internals are going to be race prepped. the engine will also have a stand alone computer. For Class 7 Score/BITD the engine and transmission must be the same that the car had from when it came from factory. mine had an automatic so it has to remain automatic and i cant change it. i will obviously strengthen the tranny and highly mod it, just i would like to know what i would need to do. i also what to know what exactly what used to make the paddle shifting computer. Thanks

Here is a standalone A340 trans controller made by a buy in cali.

Are you not allowed to boost the motor? From personal experience a little boost FAR outweighs all the NA work you can do to the motor.

I would MUCH rater a bone stock motor with a little boost over a fully built NA motor. You will get far more power from the boost as well.

yea for class 7 you cannot have a forced induction engine. there are different classes for forced induction but when you are in those classes some people truly spend a lot of money to be able to have a super powerful engine, but the fun about baja is to show off your building skills without the help of forced induction. the classes are pretty strict and one tiny factor will decide if you stay in the class or not and i would like to race class 7 to be able to prove everyone that a toyota can win as well that its not all about the rangers. toyota>ford

wow great links there. the standalone looks pretty good. its for a pretty good price as well and it has all the protection from accidentally downshifting incorrectly. my question is can i maybe put a 7 segment display into it so that i know what gear im in?

Well if 100% forced to be NA then you are on the right path, too bad these motors just don't seem to make much power NA. The 2gr about as much power stock then a 5vz will make fully built.

Can you run E85? If so I would do that in a heartbeat for baja racing and bump the compression ratio up to ~13:1, possibly higher but that seems to be the sweet spot that you should be able to make run on 93oct with a different tune at least to some extent if needed. Intake manifold and headers are a must as well if you want good wide powerband.

After all of that you might be able to make ~225-250whp, basically stock supercharged numbers. I would focus more on weight reduction then power if this is the path you plan to take.

For the transmission get a proper valve body built along with the internals and it should be fine at those power levels with a monster sized transmission cooler.

A high stall converter may or may not be a good idea as well for you. If you will be needing power from a stop/lowend power, get the high stall converter 100%, makes all the difference in the world. If you will always be at speed with low end power not an issue, then don't worry about it. I 100% LOVE my IPT converter for both racing and daily driving.

im going to be running 94 octane. Ivan Stewarts 3VZE had 400hp. im going to contact TRD and see if theyll give me the specs on his engine. what i plan on doing is basically rebuilding the whole 4Runner and basically making it one of the best Class 7 Off Road race trucks. well thats my dream at least. once i have everything set up ill def post and show everything that ive done. im going to be putting stronger fuel injectors, fuel pump, custom exhaust, and bigger diff gears. i just want to find someone who can rebuild my tranny to be a race ready tranny. just havent found anyone that does that. my goal is to prove that 4Runners can beat Rangers when it comes to off road racing because toyotas never die!

I can tell you right now that a 4runner is not the truck to use to beat rangers. Get yourself a basic single cab base model Tacoma if you want to do that. The 4runner is almost 2000lb heavier then the taco/ranger and that will severely hurt you in a race. Weight > Power.

So E85 is not allowed?

400whp is VERY hard to believe from an NA setup. Guys hardly hit that boosted. 300whp would be a lot more believable but still hard to believe since once again even supercharged motors have a hard time hitting that.

thats the nice thing about baja...its not about the weight or power or whatever...its about your driving skills and building skills. they also take into consideration the difference in weight and everything soo it works out. e85 is allowed. you can basically use any type of fuel that you want as long as its doesnt raise ur hp cuz of additives or what not. and ivan stewarts did have 400hp. thing is trd put a hell of a lot of work into the engine. but theres lots of specs that show it did have 400hp without forced induction. but the rangers that are good are competing in a different class cuz they have limits on their suspension mods soo theyll pretty much be even

I would still get a cheap taco for this, the lower center of gravity will also be a big plus.

A lighter truck will always have the advantage, just like in other forms of racing, power being close the lighter car almost always has the advantage. Thats how miatas can compete with Vettes even though they are in completely different classes and the vettes have around 3x the hp.

Hard to believe 400whp, maybe 400hp (~320whp) but even that is hard. The 2gr is 16 years newer, has VVT-i, more displacement, higher redline, built as a performance engine (G head vs F head) and even they are just cracking 300whp on much more efficient drivetrains. More power if you can though.

If E85 is an option you should run it without a second thought, In cali being limited to 91oct means that you will need to run some form of race gas to get any real performance out of the motor anyways. E85 is by far the cheapest and also the best fuel.

It also runs cooler which is important for a track car.

Going to agree with TA on this. A lighter truck makes the horsepower go further, it also makes it easier on all other components as they don't have to work as hard.

You say that Baja is about driving skills and building skills. TRD got a great driver in Ivan and they built a great truck looking at anything and everything to make it better, that would include making it as light as possible.

Not saying don't build your 4Runner, go for it and have fun doing it AND post up build progress on YT. Just don't think that you will beat a lighter vehicle that is also built to be the best, driver skill withstanding.
