Once Again Fuel Mileage

Ok so i have a 1995 toyota 4runner 135k 5spd. I just recently got 9.8 mpg, its cold here just over the past week around the low 30's. My egr valve has been throwing a code. i can hear air coming from the modulator for it i believe. When it first starts in the moring its cold. If u mess with the throttle it will stumble, for a minute or so u can get some blue or black smoke. Just wondering if anyone has some input on this thanks. what do u think i should do. I was getting around 15-17 city prior to this cold weather.

Holly crap, blue and black smoke hu? I would check your oil for water. Might be a blown head gasket. You should get over 15 mpg, even in 4wd.

But it doesnt run hot at all and it uses no antifreeze. i did suck water into my motor about 4 months ago. it stalled it out but i did everthing properly and have been getting 15-17mpg after that incident.

well since it started suddenly, and you were getting good MPG prior, it is hard to guess. the blue and BLACK smoke is worrisome. is it a 22re or 3vze? when was the last tuneup? fuel filter? o2 sensor? fuel system cleaning?

black smoke = fuel, blue smoke = oil.

if it's blowing blue smoke on startup or heavy deceleration, it's most likely your valve stem seals.

hmm, checked your intake hose between the AFM and the throttle body for leaks or cracks? any air getting in there and not going through the AFM will cause all sorts of wierd problems.

That's what I was wanting to get at, if it's constant black smoke I'm guessing leaky injectors or the computer is dumping more fuel than needed.

edit: I would help diagnose the code itself but I no longer have access to alldata. Do you know what the code description is?
