Hello Everyone, I am a new member to the forum & have a pretty good question I believe to start out w/. I own a '95 4Runner 4x4 w/ the 3.0 V6. I have had a few head aches over the last 7,000 miles. The first one started when the #6 valve burn & I had the engine rebuilt at just under 153k. I made a few changes & added some stuff in the rebuild. One of the ad ons was a remote oil filter kit. Well about 7k late one of the oil lines came off which resulted in a 2nd rebuild (spun bearing & broken cam). The company who rebuilt the engine does not want to put the original oil cool back on due to metal contamination & I don't care for the $456.00 price tag at the dealer. I personally do not see what good it does since it relies on engine coolant to cool oil. My question is this. Has anyone ever removed the Oil Cooler from their 4Runner? One other change hich may effect this is that I also had Downey headers put on. It seems to me that the engine can now flow better & this should result in it having a cooler oil temp. Am I right in thinking this?. How Toyota ever got away w/ that factory exhaust set up is beyond me.

Which oil cooler is over $400?? If it is that factory one I asay go with a used one.. (I have one I can sell you cheap ) I can not believe that those are all that expensive... But I agree, you should change it either way.. and ditch that remote crap.. That is the exact reason I hate them.. (and those stupid flip leaver drains..)

 

The oil cooler in question is the one that attaches to the block and the oil is cooled by engine coolant. The remote kit did not have a valve, but it physically moved the filter.

 

Having headers on the car, in no way will make the engine's oil cooler, IMO. Find a used part as someone already suggested, if the new one is too expensive for you.

Just making sure were talking about the same part. This is the oil cooler that sits to the right of the oil filter that has 2 water lines coming out of it right?

 

I rebuilt mine a few weeks ago with new seals and orings. Make sure when you disassemble your current one to take a set of lock grip pliers and block off the 2 coolant hoses that go into the cooler. This will keep you from loosing all your coolant from the radiator. I would suggest a rebuild kit from toyota. I think its like 23 bucks for the seals and orings. Once the seals dry up they tent to sweat the oil out and will make a mess under your truck even to the extent of loosing a little pressure. 1 bolt stud holds the assmbly into the block. Make sure you use a torque wrench when you install the new cooler. Good luck!

 

Thanks for the advise on rebuilding it but am putting my old one in the trash after I spun the bearing & sent bits of metal around in the engine. The guys who rebuild motors for me are afraid it could have metal in it that may find its way back into the rebuilt engine. I am hoping my mechanic will at least wait until I receive the used oil cooler before he puts the motor back in. It will be alot easier if he does.

Hee.. Hee.. yes, I know what you are looking for.. Only one oil cooler on the truck.. round gold thingee with a big 'ole bolt thru it left side of the block.... 96mm in diameter

Yep thats the one. I'm still kinda new to the 4Runner scene (a little better than 2 years now). Saabs used to be my play toys.
