It squeals pretty loud when driving 20+ mph, and from what I can tell is coming from the rear. It used to be the case that once I hit the accelerator the noise would go away, but as it gets colder, it tends to happen no matter what.

Any ideas on what this could be?

My steering was making an awful noise a couple weeks ago, so I took it to the shop and they said I need a new power steering pump. The quote was also $1000, which seemed ridiculous, so I put anti-leak power steering fluid in and haven't heard the noise since.

I've done a bit of research online and I have a feeling this squealing noise might also be the power steering pump. it seems that the noise is coming from under the bed though, so I'm really not sure.

Any help would be most appreciated!

hmmm it seems obvious that it must be related to the power steering pump-but we only know what you have told us. A shop has told you the pump is failing. My first guess would be a belt-simply by the description of "squeal."

Get more opinions on where the noise is originating, use friends to give you more input on where they hear the squeal but meanwhile I would simply be shopping for a new or used/rebuilt p. steering pump.

 

Does this happen more often on first starting up and then somewhat go away after warming up? I had squealing noises on my last rig with the same frequency that you stated - all it took was a little extra tension on the alternator bracket

 

u joints can squeel if they are dry.

 

if its only happening when the truck is moving and not when sitting still then you can rule out the power steering pump

jack the rear axle up and put it on jack stands, then let it idle in first or second gear and see if you can hear the noise, that way you can get under it and listen
