hi, i have a 99 2.7 auto 4runner that wont go inito reverse easily, it take sabout 5-10 min to get into reverse, this morning it wouldnt even get in gear, it goes to D, 2, L with no problem and even goes into reverse after its been run for a while, but cold it wont go, it doesnt throw a CEL or anything, a mechanic told me that it has to be repaired, but is there anything i could check before spending more than 1k? any sensors or switches or even the linkage? im new to toyotas so any help is much appreciated

 

Silly question but have you checked the trans fluid level? Or done a trans service lately? If it's at a proper level, Lucas oil makes a product to add to trans. My 01 3.4 runner had a similar issue. I added the Lucas additive and went another 40k with no issues.

 

Still trying to find a solution, i have read a bunch of threads, some pointed out that a bad ground to the ecu could cause this, does this trans has a separate control module? I also read somewhere that the neutral/reverse switch or the tps could be the issue, if it is the tps, that would also make sense due to the high idle, also the R does not light up on the dash and no reverse light, the reverse gear only works when the yota has been warmed up.

 

There is no separate ECU for the transmission, but there are several sensors attached to the transmission. You can PM @TheDurk for the Electrical Wiring Diagrams (EWDs).

 

Did sone testing today, i started the truck in N, then put reverse and it went no issues at all!
But if i start it in park it wont grab reverse, so i know its something electrical at least, where is the neutral reverse switch located? Is that even the correct name?

 

Ramos, Did you get that problem squared-away? Ive been having the same issue; very slow to shift into Reverse, and I recently started blowing a fuse when shifting through the gears to Park from Drive. I think I'm going to start looking at the Neutral/Reverse sensor/switch, and whatever else sensor I find sticking out of my tranny.
