My NAPA axles have never torn or broken (yet--going on 3 years. Of course, I don't wheel as hard as some of you guys). I made it a point to not get their "remanufactored" axles, but NEW. I've heard a lot of people having problems with the reman'ed ones. The new ones also come with a lifetime warranty. They're $114, which is much cheaper than OEM.

Again, make sure you get "NEW". There is only a $20 difference between reman and new.

I've never had to undo the brake assembly. I usually undo the lower ball joint (4 bolts on the bottom of the ball joint). Getting the lower ball joint back on is usually the toughest part, but a cheap bottle jack helps with that. You just have to make sure that you have the 36mm axle nut and a good breaker bar.

I'd just replace the boots, but, I am a cheap bastard...

The CV's will be fine...just clean them well.
Well, i'm going ot be out of town this weekend so its look like next weekend will be my best opening to tackle this. I too am a cheap bastard, and without any real issue with the CV's as far as I can tell I may be leaning this way. (Only reason I even considered the cheap new ones was in the event that the stockers were torn up and in an effort to save some down time.) If I just clean, regrease and reboot whats the best method for cleaning the cv's? (I'm thinking, soak/scrub in degreaser, rinse, inspect, then start getting them greasy again).
