No premium gas in Phoenix, what do I do?
#21
I'll second the Toulene route - I've been using it for over two years
I always keep about a Liter/Quart with me in case I can't trust the town I'm in for its premium. If I fill with low octane I add about 1/2 of my stash into the tank and never get any ping or poor performance.Tom.

I found premium at the Cobblestone Car Wash at Pima and FLW. You have to get a car wash to get premium, but I needed the runner cleaned anyway. $50 for a car wash and 12 gallons of gas. Good lord!!
BTW - I am going to try that trick with wiring the blow-off valve open. Good idea.

toluene availability
Speaking as a chemist - anybody tried looking for toluene at a chemical supply house? It is a very versatile solvent used in chemistry labs all the time. Should be able to buy it in 5L jugs pretty easily. Can get it ~99.999% pure too if you want

4L of toluene going for...
4L of toluene goes for ~$40. If you want to have a lifetime supply, 20L is only $108. Seriously, this is 99% pure, chemistry grade stuff. A local chemical supply house might stock a grade of lower purity. Would be interesting to compare this price to your average paint thinner type toluene.

what is toluene? Where did this topic go?
News is, the pipeline fix didn't work and they found yet another break in the pipe, so it's going to be at least another 2-3 weeks of $$$ gas and running with no boost!

I always fill up when I hit half tank - ALWAYS!
The reason is because when I am at half or below, I average about one mile per gallon, no kidding either. However, when I am full, (And I mean FULL, I don't stop when the pump clicks, I still add about another gallon and a half, shaking the truck around so the gas can go down!) I get around 60 miles for the first quarter tank in city drive. The next quarter is usually about 40 miles, and the rest half is like nine miles, all jokes aside.
I filled up today at this CHEVRON I was passing by and there was no wait. I was still at three-quarters, and went to top off... LOL! Hate me now...................
Hey, better be safe than sorry.
Yeah, but looks like this pipe won't be fixed any time soon.
After inspecting the pipe after the supposed repair, they found yet another rupture, atleast that's what they're telling us. But I don't believe any of this bull˟˟˟˟, I know they're trying to take advantage of us, and they're doing alright.
Looks to me, like these prices that we have now, will stay even after this is all said and done.

I just returned from So Cal last night. Prices there went up about .5 a gallon while I was there. I topped up my tank just before entering Phoenix in Tonopah. I payed $2.03 for 91 Premium. Thought I better top up before getting home.

Toulene is 114 Octane
Xylene is 117 Octane
the ratio of the mix should not exceed 70% gasoline to 30% xylene. Add 5oz of marvels oil or 2-stroke motor oil per gallon of solvent.
So roughly you can add 5 gallons of solvent, 25ozs. lubricant and top off with 92/3 octane.
And yes you still need a lubricating property with Toulene. I use MMO. ATF is perfect too.

Toulene
Toulene is the way to go. Just go to the paint store and look for paint thinner. Its for your sick grandmother whose only joy in life is to make oil painting.... lots of 'em, thats why you need the 10 gallons

I tried two cans of octane booster, and that didn't help at all. The local 76 Station that usually sells 100 octane is out of gas....
Aaaargh. This sucks!

You have to find premium, there are no easy work-arounds....
When heading to mountains, I'll add 3/4 gallon of toulene which changes 91 octane to 92 octane. Sherwin-Williams either has it or can get it from one of their stores/warehouse.
