Next step in my build...gears?
So after going on a trip with steve from sonora steve and some other local guys, and after running some pretty gnarly trails abusing my clutch, it's time to regear. I should have done it when I put my rear locker in, but did not understand the importance of gears then
anyway I have looked around on online lot. And not sure what exactly to get. I think I want 4.88's. As I really dont care about gas milage and RPM's on the freeway cause I am about to buy a second car to commute with. Any ideas on where to order from? I will go to 4wheelparts in the morning to get a quote, but I have feeling its going to be way over priced.

From your picture you have a 3rd gen 4runner, I'd change your sig.
4.88's would be good, but 5.29's would be better, especially if you don't care about rpm and gas mileage.

you can find online calculators that will let you punch in your 5th gear ratio to find rpms and stuff but if you dont care...5.29s will obviously be better for the trail. i put 4.88 in mine where 4.56 would have been closer to stock ratios for my auto trans.

I just built sliders last week and just plumbed them into my on board air system before school today. So that is all set.
SO the votes are in, I will call east coast gear and get 5.29's and the install kits.
Now for installing them.......

O and here are some pics of the sliders I built with some help from my buddy.
They're 3'x2' (not painted yet) and weled to the frame using 1/4" plates.
Not totally finished with pluming the air stuff, still got to run hose for right side as you can see from the pic of the 2.5 gal tank.

I did, I went with the 5.29's. I pulled the front and rear diff out and had them done at my buddies shop for $200 bucks. I love them, esp with the 35" s. On my next truck it will be the first thing I do. If your '98 runner is not a DD, I would say go higher than 4.88's.

Yeah I do drive it to work every day (10 minutes on the highway) and for me to get to any decent trails it's about 90 minutes of highway driving away. So I think I'm leaning towards 4.88's. I keep second guessing myself though and start thinking about getting the 5.29's. Stupid brain!

4.88 are probably okay. But there is something cool about watching my friends' stock half tons stuggle up a hill, then going last with my rig at the bottom, putting it in 4LO,
1st gear, and then getting out and watching it go up by itself. haha the truck sits at about 750-850RPM and is yet to stall out.
