This is the way I see it. 1, I tow a boat. 2. The V-6 is an entirely new engine. Yes it is a Toyota but why take a chance for $900 when the V-8 has been around for 5 years or so now and the fact that most mags consider it one of the best engines to ever be used in a truck/SUV. To me is was simple. I have ready that performance is very simular between the two until you tow something. But boy is that V-8 smooth. Wouldn't have it any other way.

 

Well, I don't know if I should say this but I have had mine at 105 with the cruise on. I was thinking "man is this smooth" and then I looked at the tach. A tad over 3000 rpm I believe. Now that is a V-8! My 92 3.0 is running about 60 mph at 3k. That fact is that V-8 is barely doing anything in normal driving.

 

First I gotta say that anyone buying a V6 4Runner thinking their saving the planet did you get that and by the way I use my V8 to haul my ass around, it's not so skinny cause I want to be a pro bodybuilder

yeah man this truck is smooth, I was crusin behind my friends Cobra thinking Im pushing over a 100 and I was way over the 110 mark, it was off the speedo, Im guessing I was doin at least 120 not gonna do that again till I get Yokohama AVS tires

I guess it's agreed, if you wear musclepants and like to go 120mph than get the V8. If you're a skinny ass that likes to tow boats, get the V6

Exactly! However when you have a engine that makes good power and torque then it can benifit from a taller highway gearing on the highway. I believe that my truck is somewhere around 2200 or so at 75. Both motors put out very good power. Try that type of gearing in my 3.0 and it would probably never see 75. Kind of similar to putting big tires on a 4 cyl 4X4 without changing the axle gearing to compensate. I had a friend that put big tires on a small 4X4 years ago and couldn't use 5th gear anymore because of it. Anyway the v-8 is proven and to me that is worth a lot. Oh only did the 105 once, had to test it's abilities.

 

 

Yeah I looked while I was driving today. About 2000rpms at 65mph and about 2500rpms at 80mph (but that is about as fast as I ever go) 2300 at 75mph sounds about the same.
On a road trip (my first in the 4R will be this september) I'll be lumping along at 2-2300rpms most of the time! That will be good for gas mileage so I'm hoping to get good range out of a tank.

My computer says I avg. 17.8mpg so far on mostly city driving. Not bad at all considering I've been using the A/C alot and a bunch of stop-n-go.

 

I have been on a couple of road trips since buying the SUV now with 4000 miles on it. "My" v-8 got around 17 to 18 doing the math and the computer said 19-20. I keep checking it and it always seems to be about 2 mpg high. I tried all grades of fuel and saw no differance. That is traveling at 70-75, I am ok with that. To me it is not bad for a SUV with a v-8. In city driving my computer says between 15 and 16 which is really 13-14 which hurts a little but I forget about it when I nail the go pedal. I have read that there are guys that get better, I guess it is my foot. Don't mind though.

 

I get 19.5 MPG on average, 20.5MPG on freeway, 20MPG with the bucket on the back and 17.5MPG with the boat, solid.

 

Ok,OK...I'll ask. What's the deal with the bucket?

That is one of the funniest things that I have saw. The funny part is I have no doubt that it works.. WELL.......

Has the price dropped any on one since the new has worn off. I figure that the markups should be over since the newness has probably subsided.

 

Isn't the V8 something like 130lbs heavier than the V6? And the listed torque difference is something around 40 lbs-ft.

So

282/4320 lbs = 0.0652
320/4450 lbs= 0.0719

Just a word. Drove 4 V6 4runners in the past month. All 2004. 3 of the 4 had definate valve ticking. Wife wants one. But it's gonna be a V8. Dealers know of this problem. Toyota knows of this problem and more and more people are becoming aware of it daily. Congrats to Mish on winning is arbitration!
