I don't have a clue about auto trannies, but I do have a question for ya: How can you be a "desert rat" in Coos Bay Oregon??? That's about as non-desert as it gets!
Come down here to Yuma, it was 113 a few minutes ago. Burned, literally felt like the skin was burning when I went outside. I'll trade ya! I have 2.6 acres, a couple of mobiles...not great, but it's all paid for and everything...I'll trade ya straight across for WHATEVER you have up there! I HATE THIS PLACE!!!!

It could be the valve body? In automatic transmissions the shift's (shift points) are controlled by pressure. A valve or two in mine were stuck shut and nuked my stock one. I'm not exactly sure because I didn't have the issue with the heater fan but thats my .02
