Just spoke with TireRack. Said a lot of guys go with the 75s over the stock 70s, but couldn't guaranty no rubbing. Looks like that's the way I'm going.

 

Never go by tirerack specs. I mean come on, people on here are buying tires based on the specs tire rack gives? Thats crazy.

You can take some of the best rain tires on tirerack and the wet traction rating will be 8.4. Then you can take a tire that everyone says is bad in the rain, such as the BFG AT (what I have), and tire rack says the wet traction is 8.1.

Or how about a pure dry traction racing tire vs the BFG AT in dry traction. Shouldnt even be on the same scale right? Nope, BFG GForce - 9.5 BFG AT Offroad - 8.9.

As far as I'm concerned thats the worst rating system ever if the difference between best and worst is .3-.6 .

actually, if you check w/ a GPS, a STOCK runner is about 3% slower than indicated. going to a 285/75-16 goes up by about 3% in diameter, actually making your speedometer dead on. the odometer then becomes about 3% short on it's indicated distance, so take that into account when you calculate MPG's (add 3% to your calculated MPG).

you will drop about 1 to 1.5 MPG when going up to the 285/75-16's over the 285/70-16's.

if you want more clearance, you can get a 1" 4Crawler Body Lift for about $150 and install it yourself in less than 3 hours. it's very easy and will give you more clearance to prevent rubbing on the pinch weld.

i have a total of 3.5" of lift and run 305/70-16's (big 33's) and i regeared to 4.56's. i'm getting 18 MPG @ 75 MPH and 2450 RPM on the interstate (for comparison)....

 

Could be a bit more than 1-1.5 MPG more since mine gets about 21 MPG (calculated) on average with stock P265/70R16's.

 

with my 4WD limited, i went from about 18.5 to about 17 with the jump. then with 285's i went to 16. added the supercharger and it went to 17. after a regear, pulling the supercharger and going up to 305's, i'm back up to 18.

 

The first jump you did was 265/70's to 265/75's?

Nice to know a S/C will actually add MPG.....might have to consider that.
I forget, did you pull the S/C for cost of running premuim or something else?

 

at the time, i was driving it about 115 miles a day, 5 days a week (before i got the '90 accord) and every little bit i could save on gas would help. not only that, but i was already having the regear and the front locked, so with the regear, the SC wasn't needed as much and selling it pretty much paid for the entire regear & locking of the front including labor.

by selling it and regearing, i not only dropped $0.20 per gallon off my BIG fuel bill, but i also gained a MPG in the process and didn't loose any $ out of pocket other than what had already been spent on the SC (about $600 total)...

 

Bamachem, You mention something about the changes from 285/70 to 28575's and the results I will see. I went from 265/70 to 265/75. Now, being that the second number is the percent of the first number (70% of 265 vs. 75% of 265) I would probably not see the same change as if I was running 285's..... correct?

 

my progression:

275/70-16's (landcruiser size - was on the runner when i got it)
265/70-16's (swapped from other runner before i sold it)
265/75-16's Nitto Terra Grapplers
285/75-16's Goodyear MT/R's
305/70-16's Goodyear MT/R's


265mm * 0.70 = 185.5mm, 185.5mm = 7.3031", (7.3031" * 2)+16 = 30.6062"

265mm * 0.75 = 198.8mm, 198.8mm = 7.8248", (7.8248" * 2)+16 = 31.6496"

(31.6496" - 30.6062") / 30.6062" = 0.03409 or 3.4% difference in circumference & diameter

that equated to a ~1.5 MPG loss for me.

 

i've noticed that there's almost no mention of the les schwab wild country txr on this board. granted, they're not the most aggressive tread out there, but they do pretty damn well in snow and ice from my experience. a bit loud on dry pavement though. anybody else have any opinions about them?

 

Well, I finally had them put on my truck. Got bent over for the Tire Balancing & Allignment though.

 

After much deliberation and research, I think I'm going with some 265/75/16 BFG T/A KO's on some American racing 16x8" Outlaw II wheels. Pretty much what I ran on my '85 x-cab back in 1989. These should be on later next week I hope.
