Need Tech Help

Hi everyone, great to see/join this toyota community, I have a 98 Tacoma V6 with 265000 on it, I LOVE THIS TRUCK! However, lately I am having a problem, on cold starts, the engine will crank excessively before starting, accompanied by heavy gas smell like it is running rich. After it is warm it starts fine. As sson as it is left for a few hours, the excessive cranking begins again....timing bel was changed at approx 200000, i just had new plugs and filter installed, the dealer has no explanation and has basically given up on me. I am starting to wonder about the EFI module, can this be an electronic problem? Help would be appreciated...

Thanks in advance!

Darkman

First of all, welcome!!!

I'm not sure that I have the answer to your problem, but it certainly sounds like a cold-start circuit problem (assuming the '98 V6 is like other's I've seen). I'd try another Toyota dealer or find a good 'yota mechanic. Sounds like the dealer you're using doesn't know his as* from a hole in the ground.

My '91 V6 had the same problem 'bout six month's ago. The stealership couldn't find the problem either, but after reading the shop manual and some detective work,I traced the problem to the cold start injector. It was clogged after 190k miles. I replaced both the CS injector, and the CS Injector time switch and that solved my problem. Hope that helps. All together, both parts cost me around $300 here in SoCal.

That is still 165K miles so that is quite a bit of driving for sure.

Tough start when cold could be a whole bunch of things but it sounds like you have done the basic maintenance stuff to the truck (air filter, fuel filter, plugs, clean the throttle body, clean the MAF sensor, run some Techtron Fuel injection cleaner, etc). From there you might just do a simple compression check to make sure all the mechanicals are working up to par. Then start looking at other components like the fuel/air delivery and ignition systems. I have seen a throttle position sensor do something like what you mention but make sure that the vehicle is in top shape before diagnosis starts.
