Need a Steering Rack

Hi folks, I've known for awhile now that my steering rack is pretty worn on my 98 4Runner. My mechanic and good friend thinks that the aftermarket rebuilds aren't worth it and of course a new one is expensive. 1st Toyota says they have a Toyota factory rebuild now for about half the price of a new one. My recollection is that a new one is around $800 and the factory rebuild $450. Has anyone use the Toyota factory rebuilt rack and how would you rate it.
Thanks, Edy

I don't have personal experience with a a rack that was rebuilt by Toyota - but the way I see it, it'd be like buying a Toyota Certified Used Car.

It's been checked out and fixed/rebuilt according to Toyota's specs - it doesn't get much better than that aside from a new one, and this way you're saving money and also getting probably the highest quality used part available.

That's just my $.02, like I said - no personal experience with this.

I just replaced my steering rack on my '99. I bought from these guys:

http://www.buy-steering.com/addtocar.../80-00697.html

$325 + $175 core. Good service and fast, free shipping. You can also buy a UPS return label for your core from them for $12. My core deposit was credited back as soon as they received it. I've had mine in for about a month now, and no problems. Good luck to you.

Oh, and if you haven't already, you might as well replace the steering rack bushings as well.

What symptom were you guys having on your 4runners that required replacement. I am just curious because I get a steering wobble at 60mph.

Do a search for this and you'll more than likely find your answer.
Let's let the OP get his answer before clogging his thread up with a hi-jack.

Thanks,

Fink

My apologies. I have searched on here many times and get different answers. Just curious is all.

CMO many components of the suspension can cause wobble or play in the steering wheel.

Alignment shop should be able to tell you what it is-mine originally was a tie rod end but now my rack is in question...

I recommend Firestone and lifetime alignment-pays for itself after 2nd alignment and their knowledge of the suspension is significant for non mech head like me. You can always get a second opinion but I trust them and they have treated me well-while others have horror stories from chain stores like this....

4x4fink no disrespect intended nor implied-I just felt enough time had passed to help the dude out.
