Need help w/ Yakima rack decison.

Hi guys,

I have a '92 4Runner and am about to buy a rack for it. I'm partial to Yakima. I'm just not sure how to mount it.

My original idea was to mount some tracks near the back and get Railriders or Control Towers attached to the rails.

But now that I'm going to buy it I'm getting a bit of sticker shock. Not that I didn't know the stuff is expensive just that it adds up in a hurry. Those freakin' tracks are $100!

So now I'm contemplating saving the $100 and just buying Q Towers to attach above the doors. But I'm torn.

Can anyone who has one or the other give your comments on what you see as the pros and cons of either solution?

I'll be mounting different attachments - skis, bikes and some sort of basket (gotta figure that one out - I just can't see paying $250 for a f'n metal basket!). Not all at once.

Thanks,

Chris

Look at Corey for a rack mounted over the doors:

Also, there should find several Yakima threads around on yotatech

I recently purchased the Q-Tower rack for my 90 4Runner. If you shop around online, you can pick them up pretty reasonably.
My first recommendation is get the windfairing. It's an extra $40 (on sale) but it makes a world of difference. W/out it you have a low rumbling wind noise that gets worse as you go faster.
I bought Land Sharks to haul a Kayak, but haven't had a chance to use them. I like the rack above the doors because it's easy to reach. Also with the Q-towers, you can remove the rack pretty easy for security or cleaning.
For bike mounts, check out Christain's review: Here's the thread:

Good luck!!

Check out ebay, there's always a plethora of roof rack stuff, if you are patient you'll get it all, if not, you can at least score some of the parts at a discount (bars are pretty generic after all).

Yeah, maybe I will put it over the doors. Didn't think about how much easier it will be to get to that way..........

I actually have a full Yakima rack w/ bike racks, ski racks and even a small basket. It's got the old SST towers though and I can't find 4Runner clips for it.

Thanks all,

C

yakima stuff

If you can't find any clips and you don't mind putting a few holes in the roof you could try some of the #6 "landing pads" they sell for installing on pick-up caps. They have a really nice low profile when the rack is not installed. Cheers Aviator
