Is my starter, my key switch, or other going bad? (2000 4Runner)

Hi all,

I've been having starting issues with my 2000 4Runner SR5, 5spd for a couple of weeks now. Basically, when I turn the ignition key to start my truck nothing happens (it's dead), I then try a second, or even a third time and the truck fires up.
I ruled out my clutch cancel switch under the clutch pedal, since it was bypassed by connecting the wires together permanently.
I think it could be the starter or maybe the ignition key switch? I've also heard that something in the flywheel could go out that prevents the car from starting up, but I'm not sure what.
It seems like the longer the truck sits outside without turning ON the worse the starting process is.
I'm planning on taking my truck to a "Starters, Alternators Rebuilders" to get it checked out.

But in the meantime any advice or tips are appreciated.

Thanks,

When "nothing happens" do you get any clicking, or any sounds anywhere? Do you get your lights dimming as you turn the key? Toyota starters are pretty robust and also field serviceable. There is a contact kit for about $20 that replaces the internal copper electrical contacts. Since you said it gets worse the longer it sits, I'm wondering if the contacts are worn to the point of having a gap big enough to allow corrosion to form.

Second fierohink,
Our senses, including common, are the best and free diagnostic tools. Crystal ball is broken, so if you want us to help, you have tell us what you do not see, hear, fell, smell when problem occurs that you do see, hear, feel, smell when it does not occur. List things that work. things that do not work, so we know where to look.

Mine did the Same thing and it ended up being the Copper contact being burnt. Spend the $20 on the kit and fix it yourself instead of taking it to a shop. So Easy a Cave Man can do it…if I can do it so can you. Once you take it apart you will see how Basic it is to work on and Learn that these Starters are indestructible other than the contacts needing replaced every 2 to 3 hundred thousand miles.

+1 on contacts. . If starter solenoid clicks *energetically* but no cranking, 99.5% it's the contacts. However, O.P. says absolutely nothing happens.

Do you have a part number of the Toyota kit for our starters (3.4 v6)?

I've never touched my starter - it's original and currently has 511,600 miles on it..... I continue to marvel at that, as well as the original injectors.
