just put it in 4wd OFF THE PAVEMENT and let the drive it a little to make sure the dash lights come on and everything engages properly. if the 4WD light flashes, then put it in neutral and then back in drive a few times. if that doesn't work, then get it rolling, and turn left/right and shift into neutral while still moving. that should get it to engage. if it doesn't, then it may need to go in for a little TLC on the front ADD actuator.

Wow its just like the one I bought in March for 17k 01 Black SR5 65k Cali truck only spent two winters here. I love mine then I open the moonroof and slide down the back window and love it even more. Now go search for Deckplate, Foglight, & Andymod.
Enjoy

That is a real nice looking 01 Runner! Don't know about black though. I specifically looked for the gray or white ones to hide the scratches better.
Someone already asked but no answer yet. Do you plan on wheeling it? Lots of Socal action to hit up if you plan on it.
Using the 4x4 is a good thing. Not using it can be very bad as stated already. You should have no lag in engaging the 4x4. THe center diff lock does sometimes take just a second but it helps to do it rolling slowly. The Trac system is a cool thing reguardless of what you may hear. Is it as good in every situation as a locker. No, but is has its advantages. Now the VSC system is a pain in the butt. Look up Andy mod to fix that though.
Nice ride!
