Mounting my CB in the dash vents?

I have an 89 std cab. I currently have my CB on the back wall between the buckets. It’s a real pain in the ass to use if you need to adjust anything or change channels. I was thinking about mounting it in the two dash vents right above the heater controls. Seeing how I only use “Defrost” and “Feet” for heat, one of the few joys of having a std cab. I could live without those vents. Physically the CB’s height and width would be no problem. The things I’m concerned about are depth and ensuring that the heater still functions correctly after the install.

Living in Montana without a garage to working I have not torn the dash apart to look at this kind of install. So I thought I would post the question.

Has anyone done something like this?

Is there a big issue I’m not seeing?

Help!?

Thanks in advance.

Ken

I don't have any dimensions for you but I wondered if you planned on blocking off the vents behind the CB. It might not be necessary, since the control probably does that, but you wouldn't want any more heat around your CB then it makes on its own. Just a thought

Sounds like a cool idea though!

If you have one of the smaller ones then it fits perfect in the ashtray spot. Look in the tech section for some pictures of this.
Unless you are just trying to do something different, then nevermind the previous comment.

EDIT: Well crap I don't see anything in there right now for our generation but I know I have seen it before. Do a search on CB and there is some other threads with pictures.

When you get it done post a pic of it so we can see. Sounds like a really good Idea.

I will post pics when it's complete if the idea is sound.

Yes I was thinking about capping off the ducts one for the heat reason and two to ensure proper function. I did forget to mention that.

I have a Cobra 29WX NW ST so it's a full sized radio. I have seen the smaller Uniden in the ashtray location which gave me the idea of the vents in the first place.

The other reason for this move is to make room for my new CB Amp as well. Which I thought would be better on the back wall where the CB is currently. Less fiddling with this component just on or off switches.

Thanks

Your dash in the '89 is the same as my '91.
I have a big CB though so I could not fit it in the open DIN spot below the stereo like Jim (mytruck on the forum) did.

Here's his install.

This is the up side to having a Uniden. They seem to fit just about any where. I also have a full size CB so under the stereo is out.

Nice install on Jim trucks. Clean truck as well.

Thanks.
