more power or swap? pro's and cons

what do i do here guys.. my 4runner has 230,xxx miles on the original motor .. it had the recall done at 143,000 miles and they did a little more while it was in but nothing that would be considered a rebuild.. anyways my motor has a small ping at above 2800 rpm's with partial throttle.. it gets worse around 3200 but the thing is it only happens once and awhile.. its most likely a miss and causing my timing to jump therefore that cylinder is going lean once and awhile.. my question to you is what should i do for more power if i do end up having the beast rebuilt .. it is a 92 3.0 5 speed.. i was consdering swaping it over for something else but dont know what route i should go .. i am fairly new to the 4runner thing but not new to the mechanics side of things.. i want to know the pro's and cons of the motor swaps out there.. i would like to try to get something that is a 5 speed.. please let me know what you guys think also if any of you know any good places to do the swap in my area or anywhere for that matter someone that i could get a hold of and ask some info myself if need be.. i appreciate any and all the info you guys give me out there..

Welcome to the forum. I too am getting a replacement engine for my truck (long story). doaracingengines.com has stuff for the 3.0 V-6 that will give it a good power raise.

Getting any decent power gains outta the 3.0 is going to cost you some serious bucks. If you have the ability and know how I would start looking at doing a swap. Several have swapped Supercharged 3.4's into their trucks with some minor tweaking on stuff and been happy with the results.

Do a 3.4 swap! I'm gonna tackle that as soon as my 22RE craps out on my '86, that is if it ever does. 203,000 and still going strong dang-it!
