Moisture Inside the Cab

It doesn't rain much here. So who knows how long this has been an issue. The last time we had a rainy day, I noticed my windshield was fogging a lot. I don't remember it doing that before. I shrugged it off. We had pretty solid rain for the last three days, and when I got in my truck this morning, it had that funky wet there's-something-growing-in-here smell, and the windows were fogged again. There are no wet spots I can find on the carpet under the dash or below any of the windows.

Any thoughts on where to look? I think I've had an issue with funky smelling vents before, and sprayed some Lysol or something in them and cleared it up, but obviously there's a lot of moisture in the truck if the windows are fogging. The fogging windows are not something I remember ever being an issue in the past.

I don't know if this is just something I need to investigate and figure out all on my own or if there are maybe some places people have found these trucks are more prone to leak. Let me know if you have any thoughts.

Thanks!

98 Tacoma extended cab.

Not an easy inspection, but it sounds like a blocked drain from the heater/evaporator box. You could probably apply some low pressure air to the free end and see if it blows freely.

Another possibility is behind one, or both, of the kick panels in the front of the cab. The one on the driver's side has the fuse panel behind it, the passenger side has the ECU and COR. They are known leaky places, as it were. The trim on the windshield holds moisture against the body behind the glass and the sealant, and it rusts out. It leaks into the cab behind one or both kick panels.

Just someplace to sheck, although I agree the AC/heater drain tube in the floor can clog up pretty easily. Something easy enough to check.

It snows and rains here in South Central Oregon a lot. I found that taking a large sock, and filling it up with a crystalline kitty litter works extremely well to absorb moisture from the air in the cab of the truck. The kitty litter is the same stuff they use in diapers, and to grow plants in hydroponic set-ups. A silicon crystal that absorbs massive amounts of moisture. You can get a 5 lbs bag at most pet shops, cheap. Just fill up an old sock with some, put it inside the sock's mate, and set the "truck tube" in the cab someplace. I leave mine right in front of the shift levers. Works good for me. No fog on the windshield or the windows at all.

Good luck! Let us know what you find
