I installed a K&N air filter on my first 1999 4Runner Limited. Within a week I had the check engine light on and the OBD code read a MAF problem.

As you guys will know, flow sensors are expensive. I checked online and found a great write-up with pics on how to clean the MAF sensor, printed it, and gave it to my local mechanic. He fixed the problem and it did not reocurr. I assume by then the oil was no longer blowing thru.

I have had my K&N 12 years or so, np yet. I think the trick is letting it sit on rags overnight, in case there is more than needed sprayed on.

Uhhh, that dude in the YouTube video cleaned his air temperature sensor, not the MAF

 

Looked like a MAF to me, he even said it was?

was planning on doing this tomroo in the garage since its gunna rain all day, never done it b4 so i got couple questions

1: should i buy the CRC MAF sensor cleaner? or can i use a carb cleaner or CRC TB cleaner?

2: with the connected straw to spray..how far should i point at it? how much should i spray? how long in between sprays?

3: just pull out spray let dry and put back in right?

 

1: CRC MAF cleaner - don't use carb or TB cleaner on your MAF.

2: I held it about 4 or 5" away and sprayed it like 6 or 7 times in short bursts, depends on how dirty it is you may need more. Be careful not to touch the little wires inside with the straw or anything.

3: Yes.

 

thanks ill go out and do this later, its raining all day prob do it in my garage, gotta change my brake light too..is it just me or whats the deal with brake lights? at least one bulb goes out every couple months.

and also did u notice a gain in MPG?

 

Maybe you have moisture getting into your brake lights and shorting them out or something, I've never had to change mine in 9 years of owning it.

I didn't notice a change in mpg, but mine really wasn't very dirty when I cleaned it.

 

Cleaned the air filter on my 2007 Tundra TRD. Within a few miles, check engine light came on...ran a code check which was a P0101, indicating a MAF issue. Removed MAF, cleaned it with MAF cleaner and replaced. Reset the computer. About 20 miles later, check engine light comes on...same code P0101. I checked all wiring and sockets, MAF seems seated properly...any ideas why this would happen or is just a coincidence it went bad right after cleaning the Air Filter.

As above, recognized symptoms on my 97 Tacoma with aftermarket intake system way back in 07(name not recollected) but filter oil overdose caused codes.
sprayed clean with carb cleaner, but not touched!!
reset with borrowed reader, or one hour battery disconnect also works

I had to use a pick tool on the sensor wires to remove the code for my case. It came up about a month ago and would not go away despite replacing the PCV valve and grommet, air filter, cleaning the MAF sensors with the specified cleaner for it, and NOT touching the wires as advised. I also had new oxygen sensors. But when I re-checked the MAF, I noticed what looked like some debris that gotten stuck around one of the wires. I used a pick tool to gently remove it loose. After pulling the EFI relay AND fuse overnight just to be thorough, the code hasn't come back. I even passed California emissions. Try re-inspecting the wires for any gunk that could be stuck.
