I just tried the program sequence as I just received the remote I bought on e-bay, the problem is, when I expect the "pull the key out of the ignition
you should hear the door locks go lock\unlock twice" nothing happens!!!

I have read in the thread about master keys etc. What does that mean. The key I got when I bought the truck...second hand...just has the silver key. But it starts the motor etc, so I don't understand the master key scenerio.

Your Truck doesn't require a master key

Make sure your doing the sequence's exactly as shown and don't hesitate too long between each.

Well I've tried and tried to get this programming thing to work, but I can't even get the ECU to repond let alone get to the part wich involves the remote. I've tried it very fast, and very slow, nothing. Are there things I should be doing that arent listed...park on a hill....do it at night...when the moon is full...????

No aftermarket stuff, just stock. Really frustrating.

Do you even have the factory alarm system in the rig?

I don't believe so. I don't have the key with the chip in it, but there is a sticker in the drivers door window that says "Theft Avert", but I have no remote nor can I see any wiring to indicate an alarm system. Could be that someone just put the sticker on the window???

After a month of frustration with my quirky aftermarket alarm, I decided to have it removed. Unfortunately, I no longer have keyless entry (which was previously operated with an aftermarket remote). I went ahead and purchased the 98 Toyota factory remote with the 3 buttons in front and the panic in back. I have been unable to program the remote using the service manual instructions. It is very frustrating. I have a couple of questions I need answered before I drop a bunch of cash at the dealer. Do all 1998 Limiteds come equipped with factory keyless entry (I would assume so)? Are you positive you don't need the special transponder key to program the remote (so far I've been trying with a standard key)? Are there any suggestions (ex. timing) that might help me properly execute the programming instructions?

My 4runner doesn't have a factory alarm. Man, this is really frustrating. Maybe my vehicle never came with keyless entry in the first place? That would seem really odd, considering I have every other option. Maybe I do need to buy a transponder key? But someone in this thread mentioned that wasn't necessary for a 98.

Hello All,

I would like to program a key FOB but dont know what instructions to use
JadeRunner's

Or
Noliwan's

Hey this should help you... I have a 2000 4Runner SR5 with the same RS3200 alarm & engine immoblizer-- Mine came with 2 Master keys like Gangus2006 one with plastic grip the other just plain metal and one valet key--- Here are the reprogramming instructions for your remotes-- I'd had to reprogram my remotes a few times myself...

1. Start with the following conditions: you are in the vehicle

a. Key is out of the ignition
b. Drive door is open ( all other doors are closed)
c. Driver door is unlocked (other door locks don't matter)

2. Insert the key into the ignition (don't turn it) and pull it out.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times. Use an even pace and try
to go relatively fast.

b. Close, then open the drivers door.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times (same as before).
b. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
c. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
d. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (automatically)
indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1
if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter
simultaneously for 1 second.

b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons,
press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds.
Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle ( LOCK then
UNLOCK) once-- indicating successful programming. If
the door locks don't cycle, or cycle twice. Repeat steps
6a and 6b--this remote has not been accepted.

c. Repeat steps 6a and 6b for EACH transmitter that will
operate the vehicle. Including any old transmitters.

7. Close the driver door.

Hope this helps you, it did me greatly-- Good luck,

Noli--

But, I actually needed this, which works (I dug this out of an old e-mail of mine, not sure where I got it, probably 4x4Wire):

1. Make sure the vehicle is in the following conditions--
_ a. The key is NOT inserted in the ignition switch.
_ b. Drivers door is open (all other doors are closed)
c. The Drivers door is UNLOCKED.

2. Insert the key into the ignition switch, then pull it out.

3. Press the Door lock switch on the Drivers door from Lock to Unlock 5
times.
Like this: Lock, Unlock = 1

4. Close the Drivers door and open it.

5. Repeat step 3

6. Insert the key into ignition switch and turn 2 times to the "run"
position and then back, repeat.

7. Pull the key out of the ignition switch, the ECU should verify the above
completed steps by locking and unlocking the door locks twice. (if not
repeat the above 1-6 sequence)

8. Press the "Lock" and "Unlock" buttons on the remote together for at least
1/2 second. Then press either button and hold for more than 1 second and
release.

9. If steps are done correctly the ECU will "Lock" and "Unlock" the doors
once to confirm. **NOTE**: If you want to program more than one remote you
must do it at this point by repeating step 8 with another remote. (if
nothing happens then repeat ALL 8 steps)

10. Close the Drivers door and test all remotes.

Thanks for the help, I am a FJ40 guy i just got the 00 runner to replace my Daily Driver.

best
Ian

I bought a remote about 6 months ago, but I can't get it programmed because something is wrong with the locks. It is almost like the battery isn't strong enough to complete step 3. After 1 up and one down, it gets too weak to do any more.

they're essentially the same directions, the first one is easier to follow...

You are right I was thinking about these http://toyotasecurity.buypartsonline.biz/ake1.jpg

for what it is worth the ones in the thread are the right ones, the link above will make the locks confirm that it cool to program but will not accept a FOB. Oh and you do not need a master key, at least i did not have one.

Thanks for the instructions guys. I ordered a FOB from Original Keyless (couldn't find my FOB on Ebay), but the instructions they sent were off slightly. Doubling up on the on/off and then re-inserting the key one last time did the trick. Kind of a shame that they would send me inaccurate instructions.

I ordered what Original Keyless said was the correct remote, and followed these instructions after the others wouldn't work. I got to the point where the system locked and unlocked the locks, but when I pressed the keys together then pressed the lock button nothing happened. Any ideas? or do I have the wrong remote?

I just purchased a used 1997 4Runner and the prior owner lost all the remotes. What is the best way to find the FCC# for the remotes? The dealer near me refused to give me the # of the remotes without me purchasing one.

Thanks in advance.
