My 2nd gen has 170,000 miles, burns & leaks a little oil & needs to go for a 1,000 mile round-trip for the holidays. The waterpump & timing belt were changed at 100,000 & just basic maintenance since then. If it were you're rig what would you do??? It's been maintained really well & is no POS! I'll post pics tomorrow!

id take everything you would need to live in the rig for 3 days, PLUS extra oil, since its burning it, good luck have a safe trip.

 

Dont know what to tell you myself. Just go for it. FWIW, my 90 4 runner went on a 1000 mile round trip in October. It had about 145k on it. It was well maintained and was in great shape. Well, it left me stranded comming home. I had to get a rental. 1200.00 dollars and 5 days later I get it back. Problem was with the fan shaft/bracket asy. The bearing the shaft goes through froze up. No way to have known. Take duct tape, some basic tools, oil, anti freeze, tire guage, check tire pressures and above all....a cell phone. Good luck.

 

Here's what I wish I had done to the '83 when driving it back from WI:
tire balance
radiator flush
alignment
spark plug wires

Here's what I did before we left:
fuel filter
air filter
oil change (with Fram filter...BAH!)
spark plugs
cap & rotor

A good tire balance is worth the price paid on a long haul. A constant bounce at 60 MPH for 9 hours is no fun. I wish I had the time to replace and perform all the things I WANTED to do, but I didn't. Oh well. WOuld have made the trip a lot more comfortable, though.

 

If its been 70,000 miles since your last t-belt change, you may want to do it again. Are the coolant and heater hoses original? If so you should change those. Check the drive belts and all the fluids.

 

I've got 180k on mine and I wouldn't think twice about a 1000mile trip. You might want to get the timing belt changed though, I'm sure it's fine, but just in case.
