locker questions
Hi guys, I have been looking at putting in a locker, but dont know much about them or what companies make good ones. I know arb has a great one but I dont have that kind of money. I need some help with what kind to get. Also if I pulled the carrier out of the 3rd member and didnt touch the pinion would I have to reset everything or would I be able to just put the shims back in place for the side to side movement of the carrier.
any help would be great thanks guys

Assuming you have a 98 4runner, it depends entirely on which end you are talking about.
If you are talking about the rear, detroit, lockright, aussie all make good lockers. Detroit has several models, but the full locker is the best. The Powertrax No Slip has good reviews as well. The lockright and Aussie are lunchbox lockers, meaning no gear modification is needed. They go in to the existing diff, and you don't have to do anything to the gears.
In addition, there are no shims in the rear, it uses adjuster nuts, and so you'll need to make a tool (easy, and costs about 5 bucks) and get a dial indicator with a mag base, as you'll have to set the gear backlash again.

find a busted 1999 4runner limited
and get the ass end and bolt it on
I know Jacks auto parts in Billerica Ma is sitting
on a 99 limited with the front end burned to a crisp,
but everything from the back of the drivers seat to the
rear is fine. They don't have the locker listed in the parts,
but i am betting you can call them and negotiate them
pulling it and selling it. it hasn't been taken off yet
worth a shot....

I checked it out a week ago looking for a liftgate. theirs was dented too
much for me, but the rest of the rig was fine (except the burnt part)
I just sent an email asking if they would pull it
and how much, maybe they will tell me
