Lighted Ignition

Hey guys,

I could have sworn that the little ring around the ignition is supposed to light up when the doors were unlocked on my 99 4runner SR5. While I was at the dealer today I asked and they said definetly not. What gives! That is a cool feature I think all vehicles should have. Has anybody done a mod to add this feature to their 3rd gen?

The ones on my wifes old 98 and her current 99 do light up. I think if there is a clear ring it should light up. Maybe the bulb is burned out. If you don't have the clear ring you can retrofit. There used to be a writup on TTORA NE which I don't think is around anymore. You basically have to get the ring and a small relay box and install. The plugs and wiring should already be there. The dealer doesn't know what they are talking about.

My 96 also has this feature so I would assume a 99 should. Your correct that its activated upon opening the door. I cant Imagine this is limited to the Limiteds. I'm sure more feedback is on the way.

Mine doesn't have it, and that's why I love this car
Purely utilitarian with few things to break.
Never had the problem of not remember where the key goes.

Yeah, my 92 pick-up was without it but after 8 years it looked like a gofer tried to eat my dash. This was during my drinking days when I could never remember where the key went. It's looking like it may be a feature only in the Limiteds. Oooh, the luxury!

I have paid my due's. In a couple of weeks will be 4 years without a single drink. The anniversary of doing $5000 worth of damage to my truck (92' PU) and totaling another when I was hammered. Lucky I didn't hurt anyone or end up in jail on my third strike. Jan 28 the 4 year celebration, PARTYTIME!!!

My old '94 has it. It's not a ring light aroung the ignition but a square light that points to the ignition.

what are the odds i'll be able to retrofit it from the 98 tacoma trd?
Does somebody have both trucks by chance that can see if they are the same size?

I also have it in my Limited, but I always thought this was a standard feature in all the 4Runners.

Its on my 98 (limited). Its also on my brother's 99 Taco. His is Standard everything (4cyl, xtracab, power nothin). So I'd imagine that the tech is wrong.
