I had a similar problem with my 2nd Gen. that turned out to be my steering stops.

it make the knocking sound when the steering wheel is moved from the level or straight position ... not when it is cranked all the way.

Check the front sway bar upsidedown "U" mount (passenger side). I had this same problem on my donor rig (96 4Runner) and it turned out to be a bolt that had come loose on the U mount, thanks to the AC drainage landing right on the bolt.

Check it out.
