knock knock, whats wrong under there??
ok, so the dealership replaced the driveshaft on my truck because there was a knocking noise, $1250 (on warranty) later and the knock is still there.
Here is what happens... in Nuetral (5spd) with clutch out all the way, I get a knocking that i can feel on the floor and in the steering wheel. The knock is only there when I am barely rolling. It is on a 2001 v6 5spd 4x4 Tacoma. Anyone have an experience like this?? Any ideas what this could be???

It does not seem like anybody has had a similar experience?? If you have PLEASE HELP!!
So, it looks like it is going back to the dealer... Do they offer free loaner cars while you are getting serviced under warranty or do you have to pay to rent a car??

Sorry, wish I could help you with the knocking.
As far as rental cars go - I don't think there's a universal policy. I think it's more of what dealers will offer on their own. Then again - I haven't strayed too far from the dealer I take my truck in to...

Talk with a mechanic friend reveals it is most likely the input shaft and pilot bearing on the fly wheel... It is going back to the dealer tomorrow and I will keep you informed on the end result.

I think I would be looking more toward CV axles and the front drive line.

I would check what gadget said and also put it up in the air and spin each tire.
You should be able to feel it and pinpoint the source of the problem just by spinning the tire by hand.
I doubt it is the pilot bearing too.

It is not the tire or CV boot because it only does it when it is out of gear and the clutch pedal is all the way out. If it were either of those then it would do it no matter what gear the shifter was in or the clutch pedal in or out. Those have already been considered but do not make any sense. The friend is a retired mechanic and amatuer racecar driver by hobby. He seemed almost positive that it was the pilot bearing and input shaft and I trust his experience. Again, I will tell you the final verdict once it is fixed.
Also, the dealership oalready had it once and I doubt they would have overlooked those things and replaced the driveshaft .

Also, the knocking gets louder if i rev the engine under the same circumstances... or harder rather then louder.
AGAIN, ONLY WHEN THE CLUTCH IS OUT, SHIFTER IN NUETRAL AND ROLLING 1-3 MPH, NO OTHER TIME!! IF I PUSH CLUTCH IN THE KNOCK STOPS.

It is the feeling it in the steering wheel part that has me thinking front end.
I can tell you the very fastest way to trace this problem down. Noises can appear to be someplace far from where they are originating.
There is a device that is called a Chassis Ear. This thing has abbout 7 microphones on alligator clips. You clip these mics all around the tranny and front end of the truck and they are connected to a controll box. You listen to the noise with headphones and you switch through the mics with the selector switch until you find the one that is the loudest. Then you reposition the rest of the mics in that general area and before you know it, you have the source of the noise isolated. Any good professional mechanic will have a chassis ear.
Trust me, this thing is worth its weight in gold.

They put a whole new rear differential on it... another 1350 dolars!! (on the warranty of course). It seems that the knock is gone, but I am going to let it sit a few hours, get cold and try it again and see for sure if it is gone... hope so.....

They are using the typical approach of throwing expensive parts at the problem you do not need instead of properly diagnosing the problem from the start.
When you are in there next time ask them if they have ever heard of a Chassis Ear? I'll bet they give you that deer caught in the head light look and twist their head to the side like a stupid dog and tell you some stupid thing to get you out of their while they don't fix your truck.

So, finally i get my truck back... but all the praise goes to Doxon's Toyota in Auburn, WA!! They put in a new tranny, with a new clutch and balanced the flywheel.... and the clunk is gone!!
and they even washed my truck!
I would highly recomend them... even if they are a drive.... (it took me about an hour to get there and an hour back home!) But there customer service is far superior to Seattle Toyota!

ALSO..... they said there were metal shavings in the tranny because a bearing broke causing things to get all messed up.... well I think Seattle Toyota was supposed to have changed my tranny fluid...... shouldn't they have noticed that????
