K&N Air Filter Issue

Hi guys.

The previous owner of my truck had installed a K&N air filter. I have cleaned and oiled it regularly. The installation never seemed quite right to me, and the cone shaped filter element never seemed to fit right.

Well yesterday when I performed my maintenance, I finally was unable to re-install it at all. It's as if it has shrunk and is too small to fit over the air-intake tube.

Does anyone here have any experience with this set-up? I am attaching a photo here of what I am dealing with. I ended up duct-taping it in place, but that is not how I want to leave it.

Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks!

In all honesty, I would put back the factory air cleaner housing and forget about the K & N cone.

The factory air cleaner is quite good, and people don't give it enough credit.

Yes to what old87yota said.
No benefit with the K&N.

Thanks guys for the replies. I do have the original air box, so I could put it back.

I also realized I can solve the issue with a reducer like this:

Try removing the wormgear clamp or backing it off completely. That plumbing adaptor isn't a great idea. I agree with the others, even the deck plate mod is less than ideal.

Thanks Malcolm.

The photo is misleading. I removed the clamp completely and then took everything out of the truck and tried to shove the cone onto the inlet using silicone as a lubricant etc.

No dice. Over time the thing has just shrunk. I was going to try to expand it somehow, but have not come up with an idea there yet.
