Man, I'd like to hear your system, it must be nice listening to a great head unit.

My stock with the JBL Sythenthesis speaker setup is kick*ss, it sounds awesome.

It sounds anemic <sic> to me... Kind of lacks dynamics. Don't get me wrong, it's not horrible, but it could be better. It needs more power or better amp(s).

there are alot of problems with the stock stereo. static in the speakers and especially when a cd is playing. Im not talking heavy heave static but im an audio nut and hear most things people dont. The imaging in the car is one of the best stock ive found in an suv. There is no bass at all either so a whole frequecy level is missing. Also the distortion levels on the stock head units are horrible, as well are there power ratings. The more power, not the louder when it comes to speakers but the clearer they will sound.

Wow, sounds like you guys had a bunch of problems with your stock system. That's not cool.

My experience has been that I have to turn the bass down because it is very heavy, and I can pump up the volume and hear absolutely no static. Maybe a difference is our listening styles?! I don't turn the stereo up a whole lot. I never take it about 35 for regular listening.

Just to get an idea, what was stock in your runners; speakerwise and head unit wise?

The bass is exactly my problem. I have to turn the bass way down because it is drowning everything else out, but then the music doesn't sound right. It is also hard to hear the vocals over the music. At first I thought it was just some new cds I have, but when played them in a real stereo they sound great.

my problem is full range speakers dont sound clear to me, for absolute clarity you need speakers for specific frequencys. tweeters for high, main for mids, and subs for low. When you try to just cram it all into one speaker clarity, imaging and so many things are lost. Thats my opinion, and its just stock factory stereo sucks, anyone disagrees go in a car with a properly installed aftermarket stereo and tell me it doesnt sound completely different.

Hey fellas:

here's the pic of the radio shim kit that came from American International...

As you can see the kit fits perfectly! woo hoo!!!

Now don't chomp on me cuz the radio's pretty darn old... didn't want to buy a new one as i'm waiting to use my $$ for lifting this 4runner.

American International did a pretty darn good job on it as it fit perfectly with no problems. Give em a call as it's only $24.95 or something like that..

JBL Synthesis amp location request

Do the service manuals show the location(s) of the factory amps that come with the JBL Synthesis 10-speaker audio option?

As indicated in another thread, there is an effort at tundrasolutions.com to work with JBL and Toyota to address a widely reported volume/balance problem. Some of those participating in that discussion are interested in locating the factory amp(s) and trying some experiments.

Somone in this thread posted that there is an amp back in the right rear quarter panel near the subwoofer. Is that amp just for the sub, or is it a multi-channel amp for (part of) the rest of the system.

Does your manual show a DRL Resistor - possibly in the engine compartment?

Hi, does it say anything about how to change the headlight auto off delay? Mine is a 2003 SR5 4Runner. The manual said that when the headlights are on and key is in 'LOCK' and the doors are closed, the headlights will turn off by itself after 30 seconds. It also said that this delay can be changed but didn't say how. Could you look it up for me? I really would like to have it off in 10 seconds or immediately after the doors are closed.
Thank you very much in advance.

Hi impulsebrklyn,

Do you have any info in the tech manual on where the hookups are to the running board lights. I want to add these, but want to find the cable entry point and harness entry point.

Mark:

If your 4runner didn't come w/ the rb lights (like mine - sr5) then you won't find the harness points at the rb area. You're gonna have to follow a line which I believe goes up to the engine bay area. ( i removed my rb and didn't find any wiring harness/points)

Unfortunately, the tech manual (one mine that is) doesn't show the route of the wiring harness (dunno why they would leave this out).

If you plan on getting the rb w/ the lights, i would just bet that getting the harness, you'll be able to find out where it goes just by looking under.

Hope that helps.

R/B light wires terminate in a quick-disconnect and then disappear through a grommet into the rocker panel. Where they go from there is anyone's guess, but it must be part of the interior light circuit with the fade on/off.

impulsebrklyn,

Another shameless request. Can you scan the wiring of the seat belt buckle connection under the seats? I want to stop the little man from flashing at me telling me that I don't have my seat belt on.

new 4runner owner here

Does the manual, or anyone know if you can add a CD changer to the In-Dash 6 disc CD changer that comes with the vehicle? I bought a Limited and it has that 10 speaker setup with the In-Dash 6 disc changer. I do not know if it will support another changer though.

Thank you,

Jdub

Fog light wiring diagram

I was wondering if you could please copy the wiring diagram for the fog lights. I want to be able to have the fog lights on while the parking lights are on. Currently you have to have the headlights on to have the fog lights on.

I made this same mod to my Tundra and now would like to make it to my wife's new 4Runner.

Thanks.
