Just curious: Front Bumper

Look at my front bumbper on my '99 4Runner, kind of in the middle left there is a part of the bumper that can be removed, maybe 6-8 inches wide and 3-4 inches in height.

What is the use of that spot on the bumper

Thanks

mabey you should just look. Your 4runner is probably only 30ft away from your right now.

I've been seeing a lot of questions on this and other automotive forums that sound like the posters never even look at their vehicles.

not sure why, but they usually only have a tow hook on one side. My 86 pickup only came with one. My 2000 Land Cruiser also only has one.

It's there to secure the vehicle when being towed. My Mazda has one that screws into a spot behind a removable plate on the bumper.

Ouch! that hit a nerve!
Not too familiar with the 99-02 with the "fat lip" bumper as I have a 98 and my tow hooks are under the bumper on the frame, factory on right, added second to the left. Would like to see what you are talking about.

Yes, the removable piece of the chin is there so when you use the tow hook it doesn't crush the chin. Some 4runners didn't come with a tow hook. Some have thin loops to tie them down for transport. Some dealers remove the loops because they aren't strong enough to yank on if stuck. Some have the same tie down loops on the back. They are usually removed to bolt on a hitch.
