Intermittent clutch problem

Intermittent clutch problem
OK, I have a 99 tacoma base model (2.4l, 2WD, 5-speed manual), with 480,000 miles on it. So, about a month or two ago the clutch started acting weird - it would engage immediately in R and 1, as soon as I let my foot off the pedal, As I was driving home, this would happen intermittently. Sometimes the clutch would behave normally, Then after a couple of days it settled back down, so I thought that whatever the problem was, something was sticking and now it's OK. So, that went on for a while, and now the problem has suddenly manifested again, and it is very hard to get the transmission into gear sometimes. This just started yesterday, actually, and the problem is a lot worse than it was the first time.
So, I know I am going to have to do some work, but the problem is that my time is very limited and I only have 1 day a week where I can work on this, and this is my only vehicle, AND I live pretty far away from work. So I need to know for sure what the problem is before I replace the clutch and then find out it is something else. I'm not really that knowledgeable about vehicles, but I've done simple repairs like replace starters, alternators, radiator, water pump, wheel bearing...in other words, I can follow directions but I don't know a lot about troubleshooting and stuff.
Let's see - yes, this is the original clutch. Most of my driving is done on the interstate, and I don't ride the clutch on hills or at traffic lights, but yeah, I'm thinking that they all wear out eventually. But the clutch doesn't slip, it just doesn't want to engage, so I dunno. After reading a good bit here and elsewhere I'm just as clueless as when I started.
Any help?

Is it winter where you're at? Or I guess I mean is it cold?
I would first suspect something with the hydraulic system. Might need a new master and release cylinder. At least check the fluid level and color.

You had a clutch issue and you never checked your fluid level??
Bolts come loose in the clutch bracket ??
When was the last time the Clutch Hydraulics along with the rubber hose where replaced .
Has the clutch itself been replaced??
When your in 5th gear is your clutch slipping you would know by the aromatic smell of hot Clutch ??
