Buy a 2.7lL 4Runner like mine . For the last 11 months that I have kept track I get 24 mpg . I would say I drive 75% highway .

I can confirm that tire size makes a difference. I just replaced my 31's
with 32's and it cost me 1.5 MPG. Now I get 17 MPG on average instead
of the 18.5 I was getting with the 1" smaller tires. Well, more like 1.5" larger
tires when you consider 31's had no tread left on them when I replaced them.

Jwahaus, you might be getting a little bit better mileage than you think, depending on how you're calculating mileage. Going from 31" tires to 32" tires will throw off your odometer. If you're reading 400 miles to a tank, you're probably getting more like 412 miles to a tank.

The cheapest way I have found to increase gas mileage is to slow down, if you can do it without getting killed by other drivers. Find a semi going close to the speed you can live with and follow him. I'm not recommending drafting.

I use the "right lane" for sure, that way I have an escape route when those passing quickly, crash, bounce off of things and flip over.

Hybridize your Runner

How about increasing MPG while enhancing performance at the same time? This is a retrofit hybrid electrocharger that is to be re-introduced again this year at SEMA:

If the rumour is right, BMW is experimenting this with their X5 too.

Route your air conditioning to the intake manifold.
That's like a cold air intake and turbo all-in-one. Low setting is 5hp, medium 50hp, and on high 500hp. But you'll need to put a deckplate on the A/C unit.
