Ignition problems
Ok im trying to fix my friends 86 yota. It has a 22re, and one day out of nowhere it just didnt want to start. So i towed it back to the house, and we are trying to figure out whats wrong. We unplugged the wire running from the coil to the distributer, and held it by the intake metal to see if it had spark, and it had no spark at all. So we replaced the coil, still no spark, replaced the ignitor, still no spark, replaced the wire coming from the coil, still no spark. We are running out of ideas. What could it be?

Not sure if your 86 22RE is the same but I had a similar problem on a 90 3.0. In the past, ignition was simple. On computerized ignition the circuit now looks for several indicators to all be working before the power is supplied to the coil. You need to look at the wiring diagram to see what the required signals are and then work back from there. In my case, :pat: it was bent contacts on the intake air flow sensor that killed the ingnition. I spent lots of $$ on new coil and ignitor before figuring this out.

FWIW - I had that scenario on my 85 twice. It was a small harness (2 wires in a small gray sheath, IIRC) that ran across the top of the exhaust manifold. Melted. First time I just repaired it. Years later it did it again so I lengthened the wires and rerouted when I repaired it. Don't know it this will help, but you never know.
