True dat! I needs me some in-line wrenches!

Actually, I did my fuel filter about a year and a half ago. Didn't notice any change in performance either, but at least I can say I did it.

no, no worries "stump", & i hope everything turns out o'kay & that you don't get punked for alot of extracuricular "bs"(known as the ol' "we did'nt know it was broken too until we got in there" line).

I'm hoping I don't get punked as well.

I just spoke to the guy at the shop and he said the engine is torn down and he is waiting on the inspection sheet to come back to him. I will know more tomorrow morning as far as the extent of the damage is concerned and will post that when I have it.

Thanks, Buki. That's a great list for future reference.

And the suspense is killing me, too! I'm praying there's nothing wrong with block or the heads. My gut tells me there isn't. So my only additional costs will be the timing belt, water pump, and the oversized valves I bought from engnbldr.com.

I'll let you guys know tomorrow. I promise!

I brought several sets of injectors to a diesel truck shop before. a set of 3.4 injectors, some 550cc, and some 720cc. they all came out working like new.

they charged $7 a piece for cleaning injectors, and if the flow pattern was still bad after cleaning they would cycle (deep clean) the bad injectors and charge $22 each.

if they had to cycle the injectors they would also flow test and give you a print out.

Thanks for the good info, William.

Here's the latest:

I received my oversized valves today and will be delivering them to the shop tomorrow morning so the machinist can bore the heads for the larger size. The owner of the shop didn't mention anything about needing anything new, so it looks like the block and heads are OK. I don't know how long it takes to reassemble everything (anyone care to tell me?) but I'm hoping they can get it all done tomorrow and I'll be back in my ride for the weekend. If they can't, I will probably be getting the truck back on Monday.

Everyone keep your fingers crossed.

I would bet on monday.... But I hope you get it this weekend!!!! BTW - when you get a chance, I would like to meet up to check out what the oversized valves did without any other mod. You found any headers yet?

Sure, we can meet up. I haven't looked for headers.

Just got off the phone with the guy from the shop. Here's his list of things that need to be replaced. Please tell me if I'm being raped here.

Machining of the heads for the new OS valves: $120
New valve guides: $180
Oil pump housing: $186
Head bolts: $103.12
PCV hose: $28.80
Timing belt: $64.36
Timing belt tensioner: $93.51
Oil pressure switch: $69.84
Temperature switch: $60.52
Water pump: $142.18
2 feet of heater hose: $9.00
Hose clamps: $8.00
Portavacuum switch: $69.20

Parts total: $1124.53

Bringing my grand total for the rebuild to $2822.85 plus tax. That's $1000 more than the original quote. He claims these are all OEM parts that he gets from a manufacturer's warehouse.

He also claimed I need a new fuel filter, saying that there is one located on the engine, and should be replaced at the same time with servicing the fuel injectors. I'm not servicing the fuel injectors now because I think this guys is an ass and I'm not going to give him any more of my money. I only know of the one fuel filter under the passenger side rail and I replaced that one 20K miles ago. Is he trying to pull one on me?

So am I getting hosed here?

One thing I forgot. He keeps touting how quality the parts he uses are. Quote, "We don't go to AutoZone or anything like that for parts. We use all OEM."

I personally don't have a problem with AutoZone. I've used them for parts several times for different vehicles and haven't had a problem with them yet. Opinions?

I don't know of any other fuel filter. I think that is a load of shat. I would also suggest getting the parts for him. He has definitely marked up the price on a lot of the stuff. Hit up a couple local dealers, or get with William and have him grab you the stuff at Champion. There is no reason to switch out your Timing belt tensioner. In fact, the only thing I replaced on your list during my rebuild was the timing belt, valves, and valve guides. Most of the other stuff is common replacement for the guy who never wants to touch his engine again. Though lots of these components are not that easy to get to, with the exception of a couple, if you are serious about wanting to tackle future problems and doing your own maintenance, I wouldn't have him replace much of that at all. My water pump and oil pump are still original and I'm coming up on 200,000 miles. Give me a call if you want some more in depth knowledge on this....

Yeah, I thought the fuel filter thing sounded bogus.

Another thing I forgot. Originally, he said the work came with a 3 year/36000 mile warranty. But since I'm having OS valves put in, that voids any warranty they offer. I take that to mean that if anything happens after I drive my truck away, he's going to say, "Too bad."

He should offer at least a 12 month warrenty on anything he installs. He he does not feel comfertable with his machining skills he shouldn't be doing it in the first place. This is starting to sound a bit like a horror flic. Where there are all these red flags but we keep goin back...

I dunno... Never let the mechanic feel like you don't trust him 100%, but also let him know you don't mind cutting corners whereever you can. If he is in it to make money off of his labor, then we are all fine and dandy. But if he wants to make all his money off of upcharging parts and replacing things that just don't need to be, wait until he finishes machining the blcok and spacing the valves, pay him for the work done and have someone else put it back together.

It's time to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. That's all I can say right now.
