How to tell which gearing I have?
1999 SR5, 5 speed, V6 4X4 with the rear diff lock feature. So it appears it could be either 4.10 or 4.30? Is there somewhere on the vehicle that will provide this information?
IIRC, 4.10 is geared "lower" meaning higher rpms at a given speed and better for towing, climbing etc?
Thanks!

no 4.30 is "lower" gearing.. there is a chart somewhere showing what the gears are based on the axle code in the vin.
a quick 20 second search yielded me this. http://toyota.off-road.com/toyota/ar....jsp?id=274535

If you search around on richmondgear.com they have a gear ratio/rpm calculator. If you can find out an exact rpm that its running at a given speed ( if you know what your tranny's overdrive gear is, figure out what rpm your running at 70mph) and it will calculate your ring & pinion gear. Its pretty accurate, too. Another route is to look up axle codes and match it up to the sticker in the door jamb.
