My fiancés dad was going to buy this 4runner for her.

But it has already been sold and now she wants a Jeep.
Any ideas on how I can persuade her to get a Toyota?

I was going to say the same thing. Go down a bumpy road in a jeep then take her in a Toyota. Mission Accomplished!

but find out exactly what her motivation, her reasons are for getting a jeep (i'm guessing it's an image thing, but who knows). then present the arguements for why toyota is superior in those areas and more.

 

yup!! I agree with everyone here. Take her to test drive both and she should be able to make up her mine.

 

What kind and year jeep does she want?
if she can't have that old dune jumper of a yota..what kind of toyota are you thinking of getting her? You mentioned doing baja with her pops? or does she want/need a everyday driver?

Image is important for the female types, my gf drives a Freelander :cry: after I tried to tell her not to buy it.

After driving with 4Runner, she keeps taking mine from the garage and leaves me with the Freelander to drive :wtf:

You need to convince her the Toyota is fashionable, good luck. Tell her the 4th Gen is a styling statement,maybe she goes for it

I just took my Fiancé out on a wheeling trip with the local TTORA and she was like "I'd drive a 4Runner, I want one newer than yours [3rd gen]"

 

Pick a year, like say 98. Then compile an Excel spreadsheet comparing both the Cherokee and the 4Runner. Take a real close look at the resale values.

Then, ask her if she likes oil stains on the driveway.

 

Kind of like what Christian said, if you go check out the consumer reports of a Jeep of any particular year and cross-reference any of the Toyota trucks I'm sure that will speak for itself.

If not there have been plenty of threads lately about either Toyota retaining higher resale values and also Toyota's rating for off-roading.

If not that then maybe you should find an impartial former Jeep owner. I have a co-worker who will never buy a Jeep again. He got his Wrangler partially for image and after all the problems he's had with it he's never ever getting another one.

 

My wife (who drives the 4Runner everyday during the week) came home telling me we'd never own a Jeep the other day. Then she detailed a story about a near accident she'd witnessed in her rear view mirror involving a new Jeep Liberty (stickers still in window). She blamed the incident on the tippy and quirky handling of a vehicle who's wheelbase is too short, track is too narrow and center of gravity is too high to be very stable.

Do what we always do...investigate crash test results and real world insurance claims before. 4Runners almost always come out near the top and Chrysler (ahem...I mean Daimler-Chrysler) products come out near the bottom.

I had a "tread separation" on the 4Runner...same type that rolled those Ford Ex's, at 70 mph. While I wouldn't want to go through it again, the 4Runner never felt like it was going to roll.

 

The Liberty has a wheelbase an inch longer, is 5 inches wider, and has over an inch less ground clearance than the 2nd gen 4runners. I'm not advocating jeeps, just don't like bad information being thrown around.

With stickers still being in the window, i would hazard a guess that this driver wasn't very familiar with it and so poor driving would probably play a major roll in the near-accident.

I was going to buy a Volvo S80 T6 but after reading the reviews, that changed my mind in a hurry!
I will be sticking with Toyota and Honda from now on.

You get what you pay for. If she likes driving a tank with no refinement what-so-ever then get a wrangler. You can get a new wrangler for the same price as a used 4Runner, but... 99.9% of the 4Runners will outlast the heep. OH!!! Show her that video that Top Gear did with the helix where they could not kill it!!! Search for top gear in the off-topic section. It should show up, if not search for top gear and toyota in google and it will def show up.

MTL, Volvos used to be excellent cars... up until they switched to the letters and numbers... now its a hit or miss. You get a great car, or you get a lemon. I LOVED my 850 and miss it all the time. I will be back in the volvo world. But... not for now... I want to see how the S60R does. Its either that or the Infiniti G35 Coupe.

I have seen to older volvos be very reliable, but I don't like the boxy looks. Finally the S80 (and S60 for that matter) appealed to my taste in the looks department but It seems like a total horror show of repairs (read about the S80 at www.carsurvey.org for some laughs!) on those cars (and it did not seem to get better with later models either). I mean the main point of a car is transportation not repairs (and the parts are disgustingly expensive to replace). So unless I bought one with the intention of gutting the Volvo electronics as a project and replacing them with a more durable system....I will have to pass.

 

The Liberty is really 5" wider than the 2nd gen? That's including the fender flares too, right? When the 4th gen first came out, they said it's about 8 or 9 inches longer, 4" wider than the 3rd gen.

So the puberty.. I mean Liberty is actually wider than the 04 4runner?

 

My previous 89 Cherokee with 8" lift drove way better than my new '04 Taco.
