Pretend an egg is under your gas pedal. Seriously.

Yup, that's about the only way, use less right foot. No hard accelerating, look ahead further so you can anticipate traffic, the less you brake the less gas you need to get going again.
New plugs etc might help if they haven't been changed in a while.

Having said all that 2nd gens are gas hogs, you either have to live with it, or swap it for a Corolla

Keep your wheels aligned and proper inflation in your tires.

yup, that's the truth. i always say, pretend there's an egg under your right shoe. that way, not only are you easy on the accelerator, but you're also easy on the brake. both will help the milage.

That and think ahead. Get some running speed on the hills and keep the RPMs low when you are on flat or downhill. I get 18mpg city 24mpg highway.

While minimal these things will help with fuel economy.
New air filter, Preferably High flow. I use a K&N OEM replacement.

Make sure you use the Right grade oil and service Tranny, Differential and T-case making sure they are at the right level.

Get a set of manual locking hubs (If you don't already have them)

A new high-flow cat, muffler and pipping.

As stated above change your plugs and wires if they are old and make sure your tiers are inflated and wheels aligned.

Consumer Guide tested the 4runner and they said.

"Also, fuel economy is very mediocre. We averaged just 13.8 mpg with a V6 model in our last test."

So there are some things you can do to help with fuel economy, But that said it will never be a TOYOTA PIRUS.

I'm doing the egg test on this tank - will post results...

The only problem is that I've already smashed several dozen eggs...

Try this..Cut a large sized whole in your driver's and passenger's floor pan (they better help also)...oh what the hell just take out the whole floor pan. Thow it in netural turn your engine off and push a long with your feet...i reccomend a few extra passengers esepicaly if its cold out and you wont be able to have your heat running..

Yea, change your Air Filter regularly or get one of those fancy reusable ones. They make a considerable distance. One of my cars gets amazing gas mileage and you can tell the difference in all my gas receipts over the years of when I changed my filter.

How do I gets the egg out of my carpeted floor mats?

I have tracked in to my mud room also. Kind of ironic that I have a mud room and I worried about tracking dirt into it.

18-19 city/21-25 highway. That's in the 4Runner.

In the Camry, I just switched to synthetic oil and a drop-in K&N and gained a whole 1.0 MPG. Used Sea Foam and gained another .5 MPG. Used BG QuickClean on the last oil change and gained another .8 MPG. I was averaging 21-22.5 MPG and now average 23.5-24.5. Not too shabby.

A drop in high-flow filter will help. So will a less restrictive exhaust. But the cost of the exhaust will take 5+ years to be made up in fuel savings. At least the filter pays for itself in the first year. Never have to buy one again.
