So as far as i know the engine bay of my car has not been throughly cleaned sense we bought the car brand new, 225,000 miles ago. I have tried rising it out with a garden hose but it didn't do much. Needless to say it needs a good cleaning. What do i need to use to clean it out? I have only heard about simple green, not really sure if that whats i need or how to use it. I don't think i need to disconnect any wires do I? Anyway, everybody loves pics so here is what it looks like. Is there anything I should be aware of?

Get it up to operating temp, spray on some industrial degreaser, let it sit about 10 minutes, pressure wash it off. Then go at it with the simple green, and agitate with a stiff bristle brush, and let sit for a few minutes, and scrub a little more, then pressure wash off.
THEN a lot of guys recomend some sort of aircraft sealeant opr osmething to be sprayed on, as it will be VERY shiny and keep it clean.

 

i heard that super clean by castrol works really well, and also at most DIY car washes they have an engine rinse, i would think a good grease/grime cutter would work well too. Upon doing this i would cover up as much electrical stuff as i could with garbage bags, small bags, saran wrap, etc. And i would do it when the engine is cold so as to no worry about a possible crack in the block from the cold water.

and whats with all the carbon buildup on the intake manifold?

 

Go to a DIY carwash place. Use the pressure washer first to get the engine wet, then use the degreaser function (if they have one). Let that sit for about 10 minutes and then pressure wash it all off. The engine bay will be spotless. You really need to use a pressure washer, a garden hose just ain't gonna cut it.

 

OH, and I forgot in my first reply...TRy to avoid soaking alternator/fuse box/ battery. Cover em up with a towel, or just avoid them with the sprayer, a little water won't hurt, but you dont want to soak 'em.

 

I use a product called Engine Brite from pep boys or wal mart. It is a spray on foam then wait a couple of mins then rise off. Simple green works to. I do recommend covering your alt and fuse box.

 

Spray it down with the Engine Brite, Made by Gunk I think, then drive to the car wash and hose it off. Dont linger on anything with wires stuck in it.
You should'nt have any problems.
