How to check wheel bearings... semi long

Ok so I have been suspect that possibly my wheel bearings needed lubed and also my brakes are dragging (lazy callipers) but I cured those questions yesterday on my way home from work. I was rushing home to change (had tickets to Orioles game) when I got to the top of the last of 2 "mountains" (hill to those on the left coast) on I-70, approx elev 1260 ft., when my Alt. belt broke
I was able to get onto the shoulder lane and coast with the truck off so it didn't overheat for 5 miles (3 down hill and 2 semi-flat). Now I know someone will tell me how dangerous that is to do, but I was prepared to stop at the first sign of danger or a vehicle in the shoulder. Lucky for me no vehicles were in the shoulder and my exit is the first one after comming down the mtn. There is a park-n-ride at the end of my exit ramp that I coasted into, a buddy of mine stopped at advanced auto picked up all three belts brought me my tools and helped me change them in the dark.

Why did the Toy engineers put the water pump and altenator on the same belt and why did the put the most important IMHO belt in the back behind 2 other belts. If that belt was in the front it wouldn't be that bad to change.

Oh well lesson learned. Buy an emergency belt.
Sorry to be so long but had to vent and share
