haha and you thought your gas milageae was bad!!!




it reads half from eye level....

and no my trip meter does no say 0000 it says 100....yes 100 miles...10 gallons of gas...WTF!!!!! i hope my gauge is off what can i do to improve this...i must have a leadfoot this tank...geeze!!!

close up the holes in your air box and adjust your afm i had the same problem it made a big difference in my mpg

 

Gas guages do not read linear. Just because it shows half a tank doesn't mean there is half of your tank capacity in the tank.

 

well i did that 2 tanks ago and those 2 weeks it went up so im just gonna leave those like they are....helping your engine breathe better should improve mpg because it allows more air to get in with same amount of effort and more air=bigger boom which makes more power for less gas

 

humm...i wouuldn't complain, i just filled up at half tank with only 83 miles on the odo

well my excuse for that is becuase I have 4.88's with 265/75's.

Also could be because: It's cold, may need a new air filter. Humm.....yea, the 4.88's with 265/75's are the main thing.

Lance I remember you saying you get around 300 mi/tank with 4.88's and 285/75's right?

 

Holy cow! I get close to 300 miles to a tank with 5.29s and 35s!

 

sounds about right to me. I get about 90 miles from full to 1/2 tank. Then another 150 the remaining half

 

My Yotas have always been the opposite - 90 miles before it moves off Full, then it drops exponentially toward the E mark.

 

yeah I get about 12 mpg in the city, and 14 on highway. modding sucks. even when you're "done" spending money, you're really not. :-(

 

so to summarize. Toyota fuel gauges bite the big one!

so do you guys think my mileage will go up if I go to 33's?

 

I'm running 33s and get about 120 miles on the first half, then another 80-100 miles second half on the odometer. This means that for a full tank (16.5 gal) I'm getting an average of 210 odometer miles, or 210*32/27=248.89 road miles per tank (15.08 mpg). That's in the city with my jackrabbit driving.

On the highway, keeping it at or below 65 mph (on the odometer, which means I'm actually going at or below 77 mph) I can get 240+ odometer miles on the tank (284.4 miles +, 17.24 mpg +)

I haven't regeared - I think it's 4.88s. I may be off on the correction calculations, but I think the original tires Toyota put on the truck are about 27" and my 33s are actually 32"

 

Mine goes down gradually until I hit the halfway point, then it drops like a rock. When the guage says it's empty, I usually have about 2 gallons left. I think they do this on purpose so people won't get stranded.

 

to gauge mpg you cant look at the gas gauge.
fill truck to full
drive truck x amount of miles
fill to full agian and record gallons added. and how many miles you drove.
devide miles and gallons to get your real mpg.
my gauge makes a huge drop alittle past half and agian at 1/4 tank. but ive never run out so its a moot point to me.

 

Nope, they work exactly like every other straight mechanical resistance fuel gauge/sender (like 99% of all vehicles.)

The reason they go down slower on the first half then faster the lower you go is simple - there is an arm with a float on it that swings across a resistor. Resistors are not linear. The resistance increases exponentially. There are some linear fuel senders out there these days, but that system costs more....

 

I have a problem with mileage too on my 99 sr5...I rarely get more than 185 miles per fillup at a average mpg of 12.5 to 14...might as well be driving an H2.

 

Try replacing your 02 sensor. If its been more than 50,000 miles since you replaced it then your mileage will suffer. Also check for codes. If you have a bad sensor the system will stay in open loop and your mileage will go down.
