As of last week, I am the proud new owner of a shiny white 91 v6 4wd 4 runner. I have always heard about how durable Toyota vehicles are, and my new toy is no exception. This thing is 12 years old with 140k and it still looks and runs like new. The only noticible problem with it is an exhaust leak that sounds like it's coming from somewhere near the manifold on the passenger side of the engine bay. I love this truck, but I'm a little embarrassed showing it off right now, because it sounds like a friggin riding lawnmower. :rolleyes: Is this an easy fix, or will it require more money and effort than its worth to fix?

Second, fix it. At 140K, it's barely broken in! It is a Toyota after all... Seriously, at 140K, there will be some maintenance issues. Nothing major, but some little stuff will leave town.

I had an '89 truck with the 3.0 V6. Never needed the head gasket replacement, ran like a top until I sold it to get the 4Runner. It had 145K on it when sold. I saw the new owner about three weeks ago, says it runs great.

Basically, I replaced just about every gasket on the thing EXCEPT the headgaskets. The majority of them didn't really need it, I was just being anal...

Fix it, you won't regret it.

I say fix it. Like azrain said, it's going to last you many years yet. And just when you think it's crapping out and time to ditch it, it will last you another 10 years after that.

 

Hey- Throw some headers on that bad boy if you are fixing the exhaust manifold anyway!

Fix your leak and if you can afford it grab some new headers. Also do some checking on your rig to see if the Head Gasket has been taken care of and check that timing belt. You may want to replace that and a few other things. This way you will have peice of mind and a long lasting rig.

 

Thanks alot for the your kind words and quick replys. This board is pretty cool. In response to the questions about the price of my 4runner, I think I got a pretty good deal. I bought it off of ebay from a dealer in Louisiana for $3700. The sticker on the plenum says that the timing belt was replaced at 100k. How soon does it need to be replaced? Also, where can I check to see if the head gasket recall has been taken care of?

 

Timing belt should be replaced every 60k miles. Get the VIN and call a local dealer, they should be able to tell you.
